Old Sarum Centenary Airshow – CANCELLED

It is with heavy heart that we must announce that Old Sarum Airfield will no longer be hosting an air show in September as was hoped. Slipstream, the company responsible for our very successful 2015 event, now believe it will be impossible to stage a similar event this year.

As a result of new regulations put in place following a number of major incidents at air shows throughout England in the past 2 years, we are sadly unable to comply with the extremely high and complex risk assessment needs that would allow Slipstream and ourselves to put on the show we would like to. Rigorous risk assessments have been undertaken and we are sadly the victims of our past popularity.

These regulations define anyone outside of the airfield but still taking up a vantage point within the display area “at risk”. The only way for us to ensure that no-one falls within this category would be to take control of any space within the display area, to cater for these viewers’ safety. However, this would include commanding control of the busy adjacent road network (A345 and Portway), our neighbours at Old Sarum Castle, and Bishopdown and it’s country park. Understandably, with these regulations in mind, we cannot plan for the safety of the people in these areas and therefore the show would not comply with these new conditions. Sadly, these are things outside of our control. We have looked at ways to co-ordinate control of these areas, but ultimately believe that it is impractical. Without such assurances, we simply cannot go ahead.

Whilst we were hoping that the proposed show would help us commemorate the centenary of the airfield, we will be sure to look for other ways top mark this milestone in our history.

But they’re not comparable hence the press didn’t compare them. You’ve kinda answered it yourself really.

Mustang51: “…Such a pity about Old Sarum and – Sabrejet, I know what went on with Old Sarum last year and it WAS a family issue so I suggest that you keep you speculation to yourself when you are not in the loop as to what happened. “

Umm…which bit of speculation would that be then?

Yes, comparable……… I am talking about the press reaction and that of the politicians. It ‘died’ down very quickly in comparison to the Hunter because no-one was really hurt. The fact that a 777 could have come down in residential area but ‘didn’t’ made it a non story.

“No such sustained hue and cry about the British Airways “Glider” at Heathrow but that’s ‘different’, isn’t it”

“Slightly” different circumstances and not really comparable?

Airshow safety ! Airshow safety ! Airshow safety ! Hue and Cry ! No such sustained hue and cry about the British Airways “Glider” at Heathrow but that’s ‘different’, isn’t it, that was just ice in the fuel……….. Such a pity about Old Sarum and – Sabrejet, I know what went on with Old Sarum last year and it WAS a family issue so I suggest that you keep you speculation to yourself when you are not in the loop as to what happened. Even last year before the family issue emerged Slipstream was having huge difficulties trying to adjust display lines, juggle how ‘freeloaders’ were going to be managed, how areas were to be sterilized, where aircraft could fly how they would transit etc, etc, etc. The Hunter incident has given every bureaucrat, politician and naysayer a forum to hear their (often) totally uninformed views on what to do and where to do it. Common sense should have prevailed here. Investigate the incident, find out the root cause – not the speculation – introduce sensible changes if necessary and get on with it. Shoreham was a tragedy to be sure that should not have happened and my thoughts are still with the families of those who passed away and were injured. So it is a tragedy when airliners and other civil aircraft plunge into residential areas but you do not see the same sort of knee-jerk reaction when that happens. Airfields like Heathrow are not suddenly closed down and moved out into the country where that possibility cannot occur. The regulations and restrictions that have been introduced since Shoreham are way over the top and for the most part do not increase “safety” one little bit. Speak with experienced Flying Display Directors and display pilots and see their views. All the new regulations do is give the pollies and bureaucrats their soap box upon which to proclaim “See, look what I have done!” and to justify their existence in places like the Daily Fail.

It is so sad to see that events like Old Sarum and charity shows elsewhere where tiny airshows brought in some cash for worthy causes shall fall by the wayside. Many more shall. Avion ancien you are right, there are no votes in airshows

Im afraid the days of just picking a site, picking some acts, and getting the infrastructure are long gone. There are now a massive amount of time looking at the area. One example is a industrial/hangar area on airport has to be completely sterile, I.e only security staff on site. Not too difficult if it is on airport, pretty much impossible if it is not. You basically need either a massive site, like Mildenhall, or somewhere in the middle of no where like Little Gransden. I am surprised Biggin Hill is still going. Military shows operate under different rules. sadly common sense went out of the window with Shoreham. The fact that that was the first fatal ‘crowd’ accident in 50 years doesn’t seem to matter.

A shame to hear this, but understandable from the organisers viewpoint.

Surely it’s time for the CAA to drop these ‘enhanced’ and complex risk assessment that have been required by organisers (and display pilots doing a private event) as a consequence of the Shoreham accident, along with the so called ‘sterile areas’.

The primary aim for the organisers of any airshow is to ensure that the spectators are not put at risk, and anyone else who wishes to watch from farmer Joe’s field, or on a road that falls into the ‘live’ side of the airfield, can do so if they like, but at their own risk!

(It’s evident from various videos uploaded to YouTube that people are still watching shows from areas that are termed live, whether they paid for entry or not).

I hope some common sense is found before the start of next years display season, and any restrictions and the enhanced risk assessments are dropped.

If not, I fear that more of the intimate and less financially off events will disappear forever.

Cheers

Paul

I wonder if a day will come when enthusiasts have to book a weekend on a cruise liner to watch fast jets displaying at low level 100 kilometres out into the Atlantic. You wouldn’t get many ‘freeloading’ spectators – unless they are willing to charter a fishing vessel to get to the display area (which the cruise line may not choose to reveal publicly)! I say it tongue in cheek, but perhaps ….. ?

Im afraid there are an increasing number of sites that, under current rules will not hold a flying display again. In this I would include Kemble, North Weald, Lee on Solent, Shoreham, and many more. Basically you can not display over habitation, industrial areas, retails areas, and major roads. Unless you can make sure these places are empty.

3rd time lucky?

Unlikely unfortunately. With the Portway development to the north and Ford/Bishopdown to the south of the runway/display line, the problems will still be the same in 2018, if not worse.

IMHO of course.

Cancelled, as was last year’s. Once unfortunate, twice…?

2015’s was very enjoyable and I hope it might be third time lucky next year?
