At old Sarum there is a museum housing what was the Boscombe Air Museum.
Inside this museum is the nose section of a Lightning which has 6 kill markings of Harriers.
Does anyone know why the lightning carries these kill markings ? (I asked at the museum bit it wasn’t known).

An urban myth which, along with a couple of others, keeps getting perpetuated, a Lightning (EE) has never shot down another aircraft friendly or otherwise, the Harrier story can be found here http://bit.ly/2HJtZq3 #13. The 6 harrier kill markings were, IIRC, from DACT (dissimilar air combat training). The owner Hugh Trevor can give you the story.

A Lightning was famously scrambled to shoot down a Harrier in the 1970s – if I remember correctly the Harrier had developed an issue and the pilot ejected but the pilotless Harrier kept on flying, and was deemed to be a threat to somebody or other’s safety. Unfortunately I can’t remember where or when this was, but I’m sure there weren’t six of them! Classic fighter pilot claim exaggeration maybe?!
