Old TV series on video/DVD?

People often ask if anyone has a video tape of this and that and often there is always someone who has it and is kind enough to copy it. However, there are an awful lot of aviation TV series that never made it on to VHS tape, let alone DVD….or have they? I recently found on E.Bay a complete series of the U.S. TV series “Whirlybirds” featuring the police Bell 47Gs, which was screened over here. How many of you are old enough to remember a BBC TV series called “Gary Haliday”, which starred Terence Longdon & Terence Alexander as DC-3 pilots running a fledging airline. Actually, Silver City Airways provided the aircraft and I think the filming was done at Lydd.
Coming more up-to-date another excellent series was “Airline” with the ‘Ruskin Air Services’ DC-3s screened by Yorkshire TV in 1982.. I wrote to Yorkshire TV to see if they had plans to issue this series on video, but they said ‘no’. I doubt if anyone has ‘Gary Haliday’ on video, I wonder if anyone recorded the ‘Airline’ series? It would be wonderful to see that again.

I can’t believe it! I thought it was fantastic news that “Airline” is being released on DVD, but Network are excelling themselves resurrecting all the old aviation TV series. As though it was telepathy, lo and behold the entire “Planemakers” series mentioned above will be released in two x 4-DVD Volumes on 23rd December 2011 – that’s 8 DVDs!

That Gary Halliday series….what was it called really…?

…err Gary Halliday, see the link in my previous post.

There was another about that time called ‘Moonflight’, which was all about secret Lysander ops’ into occupied Europe. Lots of flickering flarepaths et al. Has that one survived I wonder..????

Yes remember that, but was it called ‘Moonflight? Thought is was moonlight something?

‘The Plane Makers/ The Power Game’…..Patric Wydmark (?) I think. It was a bit naff, but they built a huge mock-up of the ‘prototype’ whatever-it-was…and it used to appear at a few airshows, as I remember seeing it in the flesh being towed around.

Patrick Wymark and the Scott-Furlong Predator..ah I remember it well. It looked like a cross between a Fairey Delta 2 and a Dassault Balzac, as it could take off vertically (via a crane!) It appeared in the static park at Biggin Hill’s BofB show in 1964 and caused a lot of interest.

Mental Sludge….’Moonflight’ anyone..?

Reading through this thread has really stirred-up some almost forgotten mental sludge. Whirlybirds….I can still recognise the sound of a Bell 47G without seeing it.. I can still remember being astonished at the utility of chewing-gum to stop-up a bullet-hole in the fuel tank…! That Gary Halliday series….what was it called really…? There was another about that time called ‘Moonflight’, which was all about secret Lysander ops’ into occupied Europe. Lots of flickering flarepaths et al. Has that one survived I wonder..???? I do recall that our tiny B&W TV meant that much of the action was rather difficult to make out…!

I never liked ‘Piece of Cake’. It was worth watching for the a/c and the flying, but like ‘Bomber’, it portrayed a rather wonky idea of widely dysfunctional aircrew. The recent ‘First Light’ was in another league.
It’ll probably be better if I don’t re-watch that really old stuff, I might have my golden memories shattered by wobbly cardboard sets etc…
If only it was commercially viable to make books by actual participants such as V.M.Yeats ‘Winged Victory’ into a film or series….

Whereas Moggy was inviting reminisences about the Whirlybirds call sign, can anyone confirm my vague (but nevertheless bizarre, considering the long lqpse of time) recollection that the call sign of Gary Halliday’s DC-3 was Golf Alpha November Lima Foxtrot?

Perhaps the cool call signs had a greater impact of the young viewers of those days.

Why would I remember such a thing decades after the show was broadcast?
Must get out more.

Not according to Wikepedia who state it was Golf Alpha Oboe Roger George.

Airline

Glad to hear Airline is available. i have had it on DVD for many years. My dad Worked for Aces High back in the day and was heavily involved in the making of this miniseries. i remember writing to Yorkshire TV back in the late ’90s and got a complete VHS copy which i then had on DVD when they became available. Last year at Oshkosh, i presented a small forum on my experiences flying the DC-3 in Texas, Mexico and Honduras and had the opening scene of Airline with the formation break ( my dad flying one of them) showing at the start. i still think that is the best DC-3 flying ever put on the big screen! also on of the ex Aces Daks from the series is here in the US,i was talking to them at Rock Falls DC-3 flyin, great to see her still going. The last time i was in that plane i was ahh…um 12! wow, ok then thats probably enough, feeling old and tired, need a lie down.

Hi Guy’s,
As well as having an interest in Aircraft, i am also a ex TV/Video repair man (now only as a hobby for personal satisfaction, but i do have a massive collection of VCR machines of most formats)
Although the true first VCR machines were huge open reel machines, they were not what we think of as early VCR

(These are all pictures easily sourced on the web)

This is a very quick pictorial history of video recorder history (missing out lots of other formats and machines, but what most people had at the time)

As for transferring Video tape to other media….
1, Use a DVD recorder connected to your VCR and transfer over.
2, Run the VCR into a computer with a video capture card, then burn to DVD or Digital file.
The only thing that i would advise is that no matter what you transfer to, always keep the master VHS, Beta,V2000 or whatever the tape is. No matter what info from a tape can almost always be saved rather than DVD and other digital info which is all or nothing.
Hope this helps someone:)

That’s great news, all we need now is series two to be commissioned.

BTW, its was great to see the former airline Dak display at DX recently.

No more public discussion of Airline please.

As the copyright do-gooders have stepped in and my PM box was full this am (you know who you are big brother/s) 😡

I missed Eastenders last night, but dare i watch what i taped today ???

Its a copyright thing apparently.

Nuff said……….. 🙁

.

Well it’s time to revive this thread after SIX years() as I am pleased to announce they must have sorted out the copyright issue as the entire Yorkshire TV series “Airline” will be released by Network as a 3-DVD set on February 13th 2012 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. At last! Hooray!

I was fortunate enough to live at the back of blackpool airport when airline was being filmed and used to run home from school andgo and see if there was any flying to be seen.

I don,t recall much as i was only 13 at the time but i remember watching it on tv

I would dearly love a copy of the series but have drawn a blank so far.

[QUOTE=Mark12;1166219]XTM

I am pretty sure “War in the Air” was first televised in the UK in the mid 1950’s. ‘Victory at Sea’ was in a similar style.

Try Google: – “War in the Air” BBC

Hi Mark, Thanks a lot. ’50’s or’60’s, what’s ten tears to a senior citizen!! Can’t wait for Chrissy, ordering now.

I may be wrong, but I’m sure War in the Air is available on DVD from DD…and Victory at Sea is also available from TimeLife.
