Old UK aircraft scrap memories & pics(2004 old thread)

Following the interest show in the Failsworth thread & especially in Mark 12’s pics, does any else have tails of wandering through old yards of past, I think it would go without saying that pics would be most welcome as well

Thank you, Oracal. I’ll see if this rings bells with anyone else.

AA, my neck of the wood – well the early years anyway. I believe the yard was in New Lane – or in that area. Possibly cleared to make way for the industrial estate that now dominates the area. As to its name… sorry, can’t help.

Can anyone identify the scrapyard at Havant at which, it is said, the ex-Shoreham Miles Marathons G-ALVY, G-AMER, G-AMGR and G-AMHT  were processed in February 1962 (the first three) and May 1964 (the fourth)?

The ground behind the hangar was already heaped up prior to the clear out so if anything is buried there I know not what ? If anything.

Was any of this burried behind the hangar at Keevil? I ask this as the ground looks to be heaped up compared to the rest of the land that surrounds the hangar. I look forward to your photos.

Shorty01,

The Vampire T.11’s that were in storage at Keevil, were WZ620 & XE921.
I believe they were being held with a view to restoration in the future.
They were moved out during 92/93.
Current whereabouts?

Sorry to drag up and old thread.

I was one of the crew who cleared the hangar at Keevil. It in deed did have the 2 Pods from Vampires XE921 and WZ620, I have pics somewere af them. Also there were 11 sets of wings booms and nacell parts also along with tons of other aircraft type components. Canbera, Hunter, Beaver, Dove, Souix, Wasp, Scout, Meteor, Vampire. This was another of the Staravia storers.

We also looked at another 2, one on a farm not far from Warminster that had lots of Canbera and Vampire airframe parts inc Boxed Vamp booms and another not far from Cheltenam on the A346. That just had tones of small boxed new components for Vampire and big boxed stuff to like new canopies, screens and rear Glazing for the Vampire.

Not sure what happened to the bulk of it but we had most of the Meteor stuf for Meteor Flight, and some of the Vampire stuff too. Aparently after we had finished at Keevil, under the mountain of parts in the middle of the hangar were boxed Spirfire looms and exhaust stubs. We even found a Bedford Fuel bowser under a pile of Canbera tyres that only had 4.500 miles on the clock !!!

I will try to find the pics I took at the time and post them up on here.

While on a railtour in the south-east I came across a scrap yard full of Phantom II’s. I would be interested to know where this was and to see some photos.

International Alloys – Aylesbury

DaveR/Robbelc,

There was just the one Brigand in the yard.

The engines to rear are most probably Merlin 68 from the Lincolns. There was a substantial number of Lincolns in the yard, all neatly stacked side by side and double tiered.

There were Tempests, a Wellington and something that puzzled for years – the top fuselage deck of a Neptune. On an earlier trip, where I just looked over the fence, Lancasters and Sunderlands.

Latterly I used to climb into the yard, over the substantial wire, at a weekend after hours, with camera and notebook. There were no savage dogs, this was a major smelting company not a metal salvage yard. I took the view then that if apprehended my ‘enthusiasm’ as ayoung 15/16 year old would shine through. What could they really do, I wasn’t stealing parts or playing in the wrecks?

Although I can’t put my hand directly on a good number of the prints from that time I do have the negatives to hand . All 127 size. I need to make a special carrier to scan then in bulk but over time I will post them if the interest is still there.

Here is what I think are Sunderlands from my first visit.

I assume to rear fuselarge on the right is from the same Brigand?
There were 44 in the VS8xx series.
Keep posting these guys, they are excellent. Anybody got any civil ones?

The photo of Aylesbury…in the background on the left hand side there looks like a pile of piston engines….I believe that it was the fifties that the Tempests started arriving there could this be the remains of some Sabre Engines?

there were racks of new/overhauled Seafury outer wings still in their transit packing at Staravia.

In the late ’70’s I only saw 1 pr of new SeaFury wings at the Ascot yard & 1 pr of Vampire (I assume T10 as allover silver) wings. I must have missed the ‘best’ years !

It dosn’t seem that long ago that there were racks of new/overhauled Seafury outer wings still in their transit packing at Staravia. I remember Doug Arnold grabbed a few and hauled them off to Blackbushe.

And here is a shot of a Brigand at Intenational Alloys in Aylesbury – as usual late 1950’s.

Yes I forgot about that one, somebody mentioned the Church Crookham one the other day which is one I’d never heard of before.I only found out a few years ago that my Grandfather (he died in ’70) was a friend of the owner of Staravia, if only we knew then what we know now !
