Old Warden 07/08/05 pictures…

After having missed about three or four previous Shuttleworth Collection shows, I managed to visit today’s show. Unfortunately not a sunset show (I LOVE those!!!) but the program was really good and there were plenty of photo opportunities as always. The half-cloudy weather made things extremely difficult though, for us photographers, as lighting conditions varied quite heavily. Well, here’s some of today’s harvest. Tomorrow I’ll post some more! 🙂

In chonological-ish order… (I was late and unfortunately missed the Skyraider(!) and Anson – DOH!)

Hey Johan! Good to see you here too. You should start a thread and post some of your stuff – especially the carrier visit 🙂

Fascinating email by the Storch owner. It is a real beauty and he’s done a fantastic job of making it look original.

Cheers

Thanks Jur & Neil!

I am using a Canon EOS 300D with a crappy Canon EF-II 75-300mm F/4.5-5.6 (which gives some horrible purple artifacts).
I normally use a different lens but it’s broken 🙁

I fiddled about quite a bit with the settings this time, due to the ever-changing light conditions. Some pics are taken at 1/320th, some at 1/250th and some at 1/200th – all at ISO 100. The Spitfire was taken at 1/100th to get the nice streaked background.
Exception is the Sabre, taken at ISO 200 and something like 1/800th s.

I used manual exposure on most of the pics, but occasionally Shuttertime Priority with +1 stop exposure compensation.

I never use any mono- or tripods, although I do occasionally lean on a fence! 😀

Great shots Ronnie!! As this is a photography forum: what lens and shutterspeeds did you use for the in-flight shots. Seems slower than 1/250 sec (moving props). Did you use any kind of support (monopod, tripod, etc.). I know how difficult it is to handle long lenses with slowish shutterspeeds. Fantastic!

Cheers guys!

Damien, no new lens yet… all with the crappy 75-300… oh! the purple halos…

The Storch replica definitely got a lot of attention. So much even, the owner dropped me an e-mail to rectify a few points about it. Let me quote from the e-mail:

My aeroplane is loosely based upon a “kit” kit but is certainly not representative of that product. For instance, the engine cowlings are completely different and more representative of the original.

For so many reasons, I always refer to my aeroplane as a Fieseler Fi156 Storch Replica…. which it IS.

One correspondent makes reference to a recent article in one of the aviation magazines. This was in “PILOT” magazine, but, because it does not represent the character and “end product” of my own example. I wrote a disclaimer letter to “PILOT” and they had the good grace to publish my letter last month, for which I thank them again.

Keep your eyes peeled for something special coming up SOON !…. Elsewhere but in England.

I have made many, many modifications and improvements, all of which have been approved and incorporated through the Popular Flying Association (Engineering Dept).

The colour scheme is entirely accurate and is a copy of an actual aeroplane, which, as it turns out, was shot down on exactly the day that I was born !

Many thanks for passing on the info to the other readers and for setting the record straight about MY aeroplane, which is unique.

With best regards,

John Ashby.

The Pup is beautiful in its new colours. Pity the sun was in hiding when it flew its display.

Very nice – didn’t realise the Pup’s upper wing had some kind of see-through panels.

Love the F-86 photo. Easily the best classic jet in the UK.

Couldn’t agree more with that, Very nice pic’s Skyraider3D.

There was a story about it in one of the recent PFA mags.

It’s FOR SALE, too (get your cheque book out, Moggy ;))

The Storch was featured a FLYER article (iirc) within the last couple of months. I’ll try and dig it out for those that are unaware of this airframe’s background. Basically the owner has spent an awful lot of time spending, building, protecting, modifying and filling in of paperwork. Top drawer stuff imo.

SLEPCEV STORCH

It’s an Aussie design, isn’t it? I saw a couple at Avalon in 1992 and again this year, though I think they were different a/c.

If you have to have a scale warbird, it’s one of the most convincing with lots of fun flyability by the look of it.

From the link by Skyraider, I’ve answered by own Q:

Born in the Yugoslavian town of Verbis, near the Hungarian border, Slepcev lived there until the age of 17, when his family moved to the east coast of Australia.
