Old Warden 2013

What a smashing collection. I’ve looked at them before but only just noticed the one of the Lysander with its landing lights on. The shots of the aircraft in the evening sunlight are superb.

I can only echo what Bill said! Wonderful photos! Keep at it and thanks for sharing!

Old Warden Saturday 28th December:

I thought I’d revive this thread to record the first day of the Shuttleworth Collection’s Engineering Open Weekend.

Splendid weather was booked a while ago, and was delivered according to plan. There were plenty of visitors and lots to see. Outside for viewing were the Collection’s Tiger Moth and Mew Gull:

The Avro 504K ran up twice:

Inside, the Spitfire and Sea Hurricane were available for close inspection:

Also featured were the SE.5a and Camel replica (with engine in place during fuel system work):

Although the weekend has no flying programme, we were entertained by a great routine from Stu Goldspink in his French built, American registered and Mexican Air Force marked CAP.10B:

The engineering staff and volunteers were, as usual, eager to inform (and entertain), this event has quickly become a valuable part of the Shuttleworth year.
Many thanks to all involved.

The show was great, particularly the M1c from my perspective as I last saw it fly when it had the pushrod peel the cowling back all those years ago.
However as far as the commentary was concerned, he seemed behind the curve when he stated more than once that the Bristol F2b and Gladiator were the only airworthy examples….

Great set of pictures DCW, where were you to get that shot looking down on the Pup?

As for Roger Hoefling, I am very pleased that he seems to be a regular Shuttleworth commentor again, he has a unique voice and unique style that fits the place perfectly.

Another vote for a great set of photographs….
And let us not forget the commentators….particularly the appearance of the great Roger Hoefling….just like the old days.

The Aurora is actually older than any of the aeroplanes being a product from 1904 and unique.

A very big ‘Thankyou’ for the wonderful pictures from the Old Warden airshows. It was almost like being there and brought back many happy memories (late 60’s early 70’s). Looking forward to your future pics from OW and Duxford.

Good weather, and the yearly opportunity to get close to the Shuttleworth Collection.
For a change, I’d like to start with the credits. With aircraft being moved around all day, and guides and helpers on guard duty in the paddock, the workload on staff and volunteers was huge. The results speak for themselves, a unique event with a great atmosphere. Many thanks to all involved.

Centre of attention in the paddock (of course) was the newly assembled Sopwith Camel replica G-BZSC (third and last Great War scout built by the Northern Aeroplane Workshops). The airframe was positioned next to her stablemates, the Bristol M1c and Sopwith Triplane.

Some of the NAW team were present for the ‘handover’ to the resident Shuttleworth engineers:

It will be a while before the Camel reaches the flightline, but her sisterships were active in the sunshine. The Bristol M.1c was very welcome, not having been seen for a long time.

More engineering excellence came from the Dawn Patrol group of scale model builders. A collection of large scale flying models, all of 1914-18 types, were on static display, with some flying demonstrations at midday. Details of the group at:

Old Warden Sunday 1st September (50th Anniversary Pageant)

Today’s airshow marked 50 years of display flying at Old Warden. Hermes Moth G-EBWD has been based for even longer (81 Years);

Richard Shuttleworth was the first owner of Spartan Arrow G-ABWP, which visited from Redhill to display with Parnall Elf G-AAIN:

The Avro Tutor was one of many to use the short (but in to wind) grass strips:

The Sea Hurricane was active again, showing a patch from the birdstrike last time:

Visiting to display was Minimoa BGA1639 / CYL:

The 1914-18 types remained grounded again. Note the sophisticated wind measurement device:
