Old Warden 2016

There was a very good turnout today for the unique Shuttleworth Indoor Airshow (or Engineering Open Weekend to be exact). Up close and personal with some of the Old Warden fleet, with staff and volunteers eager to explain and answer questions. Here’s a few pictures to start with:

The Bristol Scout C Replica, visiting for the event:

The new Ryan, again:

The latest arrival, with a true Shuttleworth pedigree (though I doubt even the Old Warden engineers could get this airworthy!

Tomorrow offers another chance to visit a great event at Old Warden.

Was perusing Flickr and came upon this photo taken of the Spitfire a couple days ago – always nice to see the great progress being made: https://www.flickr.com/photos/hangar48/31658900172/sizes/l

Old Warden Monday 21st November:

Here’s an (overdue) update from Old Warden.

The Shuttleworth ‘season’ ended seven weeks ago, but the engineers are busier than ever with annual inspections, rebuilds and repairs.

The latest project in the workshop is the 1912 Blackburn Monoplane. Uncovered indeed. It was a real treat to be invited in for a close look, and I am sure it will be a highlight of next month’s Engineering Open Workshop Days (Thu/Fri 29/30 Dec, bring biscuits!) See:

Plenty of progress on the Spitfire systems:

Also in the workshop was the Kennet Aviation Harvard:

The Sea Hurricane will be getting a new tailwheel:

Work also underway on Avro 19 and Mew Gull:

Van’s RV-7 G-TRVR has arrived for completion. This is the project started by the late Trevor Roche, and finished by John Edser for operation by the Shuttleworth Collection. Should look good with roundels….

Many thanks to all at OW for information and assistance.

Attended my first ever Old Warden show on Sunday. Won’t be the last, particularly if the Fly Navy theme is continued.
An excellent day, good selection of aircraft all fitting into the theme, lovely atmosphere and surroundings. and last but not least very good traffic management.

Excellent display. Entertaining, professional and safe.

I think the distance thing comes into force in August?

Eye4wings.. Hurricane wings are one of the great mysteries. Yes there are many flying, but if you were to administer a truth drug to those responsible they’d tell you the bits all fitted together to make them slightly different every time. That washout – well spotted. It’s achieved by the front spar tip boom/extension having a ‘drooped’ taper. And it is very subtle – not classic ‘washout’ as it only applies to the rounded tips and not the ‘primary aerofoil’ (and giving the impression of zero incidence when viewed from the side). Now, if you could use that eye to work out the angle off the vertical ‘datum’ on which the plane of the main spar web lies 🙂 Clues – it ain’t vertical, and it ain’t the 2 degree incidence either.. in practice it appears to vary somewhere in between and be how the centre section and its mounting points ‘came together’.

As an aside, originally the wings were bolted to the factory wall, and that was your jig right there!

I too am just back from Old Warden. Their shows seem to get better and better and they were justly rewarded for this by what seemed to be almost a full house. There were certainly far more people there than I am used to seeing. The flying was noticeably a bit further from the crowd, but not so far away as to spoil the enjoyment of the show.
Well done to all concerned.

I thought it was superb too, and being the first airshow I have attended this year, I did not recognise any difference in the distance of the aircraft from the crowd. Brilliant selection of aircraft and cracking weather to go with it. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

Great traffic management too, took next to no time to get out

Just got back from Old Warden with my face tingling from the sunshine, and very impressed. Despite all the added weight on their collective backs, the Shuttleworth Collection managed to put together one of the best programmes I’ve ever seen there. :applause:

Glad to hear it. Egg yolks forecast all day and not too much wind. Can’t wait!

I am half sorry to hear the Wildcat has gone as they are a visually impressive display aircraft that also make enough noise to partly drown out the commentator. That said I think Old Warden is best suited to wood and canvas aeroplanes pottering around a summer sky, bliss.

Talking of washout I think its a rare commodity on the Comet but the replica built in the USA was given some. I wonder what the rebuild of G-ACSP will get, project update here http://www.cometracer.co.uk/restoration/

Yes, sorry gents – a case of ‘act in haste repent at leisure’! I knew something was off as I posted the pic (assuming CADman had meant that aircraft). I also wasn’t paying attention as I passed through on my way through to get details from the DH60s for fellow modelers as time was limited (Swiss garden interested wife’s birthday – not mine!)

One other thing I did look for was signs of any ‘washout’ on the wings of the Hurricane as confirmation for the means I have been using for years to tip-stall proof my RC models’ wings. It is there sure enough but really hard to spot – just the merest up-turning of the tip’s trailing edge.
