Hi,
I came across an old brochure for Old Warden dated 1965 (I think from memory but 60 something) in a charity shop in Lincoln. Oxfam near the market if interested. I didn’t buy it but thumbing through showed two interesting aircraft.
One was a twin bladed Hurricane and the other a deep chin Spitfire (like certain mk’s of PR spit). These aircraft didn’t appear to be the two currently with the fleet. Interestingly there was no mention of their serials so I guess in those days people we not interested in such things.
Anyone have any info on these aircraft and what happened to them.
If they are the existing aircraft why the strange configurations.
Thanks,
Hampy.

Spitfire PR XI PL965, sold and restored to airworthiness but destroyed in a fatal crash in 2001 (being rebuilt?)

Can only imagine the Hurricane would be Z7015, still resident, but I never saw it wear a Watts prop when visiting Old Warden back then. Could it be the angle of the photo making the 3 blade appear as a 2 blade?
It could have been the angle, but did look like a two bladed prop. Aircraft looked to be painted silver, hard to tell in B&W but not camo.

Definately not PL965 – you mean PL983. The word ‘destroyed’ rarely applies to Spitfires – this one is indeed being slowly restored to fly again. PL965 is the aircraft with Hangar 11 Collection at North Weald, currently close to the end of a major refurb.
The Hurricane however is indeed the example currently flying at OW.
