I have been scanning in a few old prints from nearly twenty years ago and just wanted to share this with those who have seen neither type in the air
Apologies for the awful ‘point & shoot’ photography

I must fess up that this is a composite – the aircraft actually displayed separately.
At the time I guess we all thought both airframes would be around and active for a good few years.
How wrong we were 🙁

Well, he was flying Hurricanes (book) or Spitfires (TV) with Hornet squadron in 1940 so he must be getting on a bit……:diablo:

Old enough that living in Liverpool I could see the THUM Flight Spitfires, and then the Mossies that replaced them (From the Primary School playground)

– but if not, at least I was fortunate enough to see them daily when in service…

How old are you 😮

I think 95 was the last time I saw the mossie at OW. That was easily the best of many displays I had seen by her over the years and the one that has stuck in my memory. Sadly I never saw both de H twins together so thank you moggy.

It is impossible to describe the sound, the thrill, the sheer enormity of that aircraft cranking round the Old Warden display line, twin Merlins synchronised and bellowing.
I do hope I see another one day – but if not, at least I was fortunate enough to see them daily when in service, and finally all the wonderful 299 displays. Of these, OW will always remain my favourite.

I’m too young to have seen either type fly, so thanks Moggy. I was six years old at the demise of RR299, and remember being told about it. Didn’t really hit home though, as I was only at the beginning of my interest in aviation…

Brilliant – I’d forgotten those.

Oops. My monitor did not show the lower text, and I was lost in happy memories, as they DID indeed display together at Old Warden, 1991 I think.
The much-missed Steve Young posted these in 2004 (post 22 )

😮 No, definitely early 90s – if I had to place money on it then 1993
But like I said, the formation didn’t exist – I have just clagged two separate scans together in Photoshop. If you did see them fly together, then that would be amazing!

1987 or similar ? I was there.
I wonder if that formation was ever seen before, or been seen since that occasion.
