Old Warden Military Pageant 5-8-12

Luckily, the worst weather was confined to late morning and late afternoon, and during the airshow we were treated to some spectacular cloud backdrops.
A few cancellations didn’t prevent a great show.

The Plane Sailing Catalina is off to Moscow tomorrow:

Thanks for the Olympia information.
The recent vintage glider displays at Old Warden have added a lot to each event.
What’s next?

Thank you for the compliment about the Oly 2b; restoration took three years of sheer pleasure and I am indebted to Alan Pettit who is restoring VV401’s partner VV400 for some crucial assistance over the exact shade of blue for the finish. All my ETPS contacts and others in the gliding world could not recall the colour precisely. The late Chris Wills, even, was uncertain, but Alan found a part of VV401’s elevator in a Berkshire museum and we were able to tear off a small section of fabric. This was colour matched. VV401 was put on static display at the annual test pilots’ lunch held at Popham last week. A number of ageing test pilots came up to the Oly stating “That’s just what it was like!” – how very pleasing.

The glider took part in the Much Wenlock Olympian gliding event held at the Long Mynd in July. The set daily tasks conformed with the rules that were in force for the cancelled 1940 Olympics and all the competitors who came from ten different countries received beautiful bronze medals at the end. VV401 completed a number of flights including a bungey launch off the hillside as well as a 5hr 10minute flight on another task.

Hi, lovely shots. What sort of settings do you use?

Thanks for comments.
I’m a lazy photographer, I generally use shutter priority (1/250 as default depending on aircraft speed and need for prop blur) and let the camera work out the rest. If there’s time I may compensate exposure by a stop or two, but my golden rule is simple. Take enough pictures and by the law of averages one or two will be keepers. I shot 500+ yesterday and will keep 46.
I don’t use photoshop, but often use Windows to crop pictures. Most flying shots will benefit from careful use of cropping and levelling, and sometimes you can give ordinary shots something extra.
This photo looked nothing special until mega-cropped and tilted 45 degrees:
