I arrived in time to photograph the Demon depart for an air to air photoshoot before its arrival at Duxford for their Summer Show. It certainly looks the part with some one in the rear cockpit. The Anson also went up for some air tests during the morning.
The afternoon took a bit of a twist for me as I was invited by Rob Leigh to photograph the show from the other side of the crowd line. After a safety briefing I followed Rob out on the flight line and during the day stayed close to the parked display aircraft so not to get in the way of the people in the crowd. Although you are only a few yards nearer the action from the crowd line, there is certainly a different perspective in what was going on and a definite grin factor as aircraft and spinning prop blades turn towards you on landing or pass close by. Many thanks to Rob and anyone else at the Shuttleworth Collection who made that afternoon for me possible.
Like Duxford the day before, it clouded over by the time the flying had started with the occasional glimpse of the sun now and then. I think the highlight for most was the Lancaster that was down on the programme as a fly past but in fact did 3 passes. Although there was a bit of a breeze blowing all day it was a bit too much for the Edwardians and it was hoped that it would abate later on. An announcement was made at the end of the main show that they would possibly fly at 18.15. Alas the wind had not abated enough but the Avro Triplane did take to the air for a few circuits in very trying conditions.
