A very difficult day for the a/c and their pilots with a 15/20kt easterly wind blowing almost directly across the main runway.
Most of the lighter a/c were kept on the ground. Those that flew not only had to cope with the crosswind but also the curlover from the trees. Some pilots elected to make their final turn a few feet up once past the trees so that they could land into the wind.
Keith Dennison in the SE5 had a severe problem as it started overheating just after take-off and there was no way of making a quick return to the ground so he had to fly a circuit and in his words ‘throw it at the ground, fortunately without damage to the plane or the pilot’
I particularly liked the Antanov An2 display – especially the ‘parachute’ type descent where it descended almost vertically when flying into the wind

The Desoutter looks more like an oversized model. I wonder if the saying ‘If it looks right it flies right’ applies to this a/c?
