Old Warden Sunset Display 18-06-05 Merlin70 Pics

A great evening display as ever. The weather was fantastic and lighting conditions were good for most of the display. The moon was very nicely positioned and is likely to appear in most of today’s OW threads.

The lens is a Canon IS 100-400. At the start of the show I was using shutter priority set at 200th. For the faster a/c that was increased to 250th and 320th and I think by the time we got to the end of the show with fading light it was at 400th. Also for the later shots I used a full stop of over exposure.

Some of the ground shots (eg the Martlet) were as low as 80th as there was a conveniently placed wheelie bin to rest elbows on.

From the Hind and Gladiator onwards I switched from jpeg to RAW.

A rule of thumb that I now use (Thanks to MOTF) is not to go lower in shutter speed than the focal length of the lens. For the shots taken earlier in the show at 200th I was around 250mm and didn’t shhot any over 300mm.

For Legends lets hope the sun is out as the a/c are a long way from the crowd line and a long focal length is needed. I won’t be trying for too much prop blur as I bin too many shots. I will probably be using 320 to 400th at no greater than 300mm.

The expert snappers seem able to use longer focal lengths and slower shutter speeds but their panning technique is near perfect. Oh and they fire off a burst of 10 frames at anything that moves. 😀

Hope that helps.

Quite simply stunning! I adore the Lysander and moon shot. I think it captures the very essence of the Lysander. As for the last Spit shot….my flabber is gasted!

Boring question Tim, which lens and setting did you use? (Still trying to practice in time for Legends with my 20D)

Nice pics Tim, especially the last spit shot and the Ryan break.

Thanks Snaps.

Robbo. It appears that the Canon ‘Service’ has done the trick. I’m back to being a happy bunny at airshows rather than a grumpy old git with a camera that wouldn’t do its thing.

Here goes with the last few. My favourite being the Spit into to Sun.

Apologies for late post from OW.

I have just finished uploading the RAW pics taken on Saturday.

Although the Forum has had plenty of pics from said event, I thought I might share a few more taken as the sun was setting.

Thanks again to all the work from the volunteers who service and maintain all the vehicles and a/c and to those who take time to view and give feedback on the plethora of pics taken and posted.

Wonderfully nostalgic photography. Many thanks for posting. Bet there are some folk suffering from sunburn this morning; that low sun can really crucify any exposed skin.
