Hellooo,
I recall over the years, but not for some time now, screenings of programmes made when a lot of the veterans were in their 50’s and 60’s. Frustratingly I can’t recall any titles – but I do remember one with Bob Stanford Tuck standing next to Douglas Bader at the RAF Museum talkng about tactics in the BoB, holding an Airfix Spitfire and Me109. Awsome.
Is it possible to find these programmes and have them copied for purchase ?? Who do you ask ? Where do you search ? Another gem would be Douglas Bader on This Is Your Life . . .or am I onto a loser ?
What do you think ?

[When I enquired with ITN/Movietone news re an 8 second article from 1958 the price from the ITN archive department was exhorbitant
If you’re wanting to access period newsreel for your own private research, try www.britishpathe.com who offer free low resolution downloads.
A warning though, if you’re like me once you start you’ll still be going through the archive hours later!

Well thankyou guys – your info is much appreciated. I’ve just had an email that the programme you mention is called ‘Spitfire’ from a series called ‘Equinox’, indeed presneted by Raymond Baxter. It was produced by Channel 4.
If I have any luck with tgetting hold of the Bader programme I’ll post again.
Thanks again.

Found it, and still plays ok even though 15 years old.The programme is called Spitfire, and is narrated by ex- Spitfire pilot Raymond Baxter, who coincidentally, is launching his book tommorrow at East Kirkby.Besides Tuck and Bader(yes it is at Hendon),Johnny Johnson and Jeffery Quill feature. It was made in 1976 by BBC South. One of the best Spitfire documentaries I think.

If you’re looking to purchase the Douglas Bader This Is Your Life episode, it was programme number 335, Douglas Bader, and aired in the UK on the 31st of March 1982.
The Thames TIYL programmes that still exist used to belong to Pearson Television who were very reasonable people. I think the holdings may have moved on now though. Check at The Mausoleum Club, trhe best UK TV forum – someone will know who to approach for a quote

The series Reaching For The Skiies, narrated by Anthony Quayle, had a lot of older interviews in it too.

Hi Andy,
I recon I’ve videoed most of the WW2 aviation stuff off TV over the past 20 odd years, and I’ve definately got the tape you’re talking about.Unless someone beats me to it I’ll let you know when I get time to look for it.

I have this very tape, Bader and Tuck perhaps a little stilted in this day and age though, without looking at the tape which has a load more goodies on it I thought it was filmed at Dux, can’t be sure though. There was a series on BBC2 (?) a few years back with these on including 8 Sqn Shacks of the AEW type slipping on take off. Would you like me to have a butchers sometime?
