I don’t hate it, but the hype, the cost and the constant coverage do annoy me somewhat. So, sky plus, other channels, DVD’s and the off switch all come into use !

It is interesting to watch what other countries make of the Olympics, on their news channels.

hey could have made the population of the country far happier by taking 63 million of the 93 it cost for the bike track and give £1 million to every person in the country.

I find it all very irritating, the fact our government has more or less told us to tighten our belt, people losing or lost their jobs left right and centre over the last few years, cut backs every where, community centres, libraries closed, etc, etc ,etc yet still go ahead and spending an absolute forturne on this pointless sporting event, its an insult. I hope the sporty people are happy!! last spend report was up to £11 billion, I mean £93 million for an indoor bike track, 100’s of thousands of pounds on stupid sculpures, the security cost was reputed to be worth £238 million, its ridiculous, its SPORT for god sake!!

The world is upside down and back to front!! In regard to the Olympics itself, it would make more sense to have it in the same place every four years and the countries that take part share the spenditure so they can all play together, at least that would give value for money in terms of the facilities.

However, these weeks must be an excellent period for HMG to ‘bury’ oodles of bad news stories!

I am not anti-sport, or anti-Olympics per se, but I have refused to join the cult of the five rings. I was dragged unwillingly to watch the Olympic torch pass through the town in pouring rain as some fat bloke in an ill-fitting grubby white tracksuit waddled past (with a huge Met Police escort of cars, vans, outriders and runners!), and to rapturous applause, as he held aloft an oversized Ronson lighter with the slightest flicker of a tiny flame. What was all that about?

Whilst I understand where Arthur Pewtey is coming from, I just find the whole thing tedious and about as interesting as collecting bus numbers. In fact…less so. Whilst it is surely fine for the BBC to give wall-to-wall coverage for those who are interested why is it that we have wall-to-wall coverage on all news channels at all times, 24/7? Not all of us are interested. Some are seriously un-interested and yet are being force-fed Olympics from every media news outlet to the exclusion (or minimalisation) of all other very newsworthy story from around the world.

However, these weeks must be an excellent period for HMG to ‘bury’ oodles of bad news stories!

Anyway Arthur, you have your own Olympic Supporters Thread, and good luck to you. Each to his own. So, why not stay over there and let us grumpy, negative old blokes enjoy ourselves here having a good old moan….else we might pop across to your thread and be Victor Meldrews there just to spoil your party! :diablo::diablo:

Lots of people are interested in sport and why not? It provides good news among death, war, destruction, doom and gloom. If that’s where you want to be then fair enough but many don’t.
Sport is the same as art , hobbies, reading books etc. Ultimately useless in terms of survival of the species but done for the pure enjoyment of it. If other people can take pleasure in your achievement then what is wrong with that?
As far as BBC coverage is concerned, why shouldn’t they cover it completely – it is probably the only time in most of our lives that the Olympics will be in the UK so they are giving it their best shot. Good for them.
Never mind though, in a couple of weeks it will be over and you can go back to enjoying whatever it was you enjoyed doing before.

Tennis, football and other sports seem out of place (in Brazil at the next games there is some sort of wind sailing go-kart event…. much as they did in ancient Greece I believe…..)
