interesting theories….well Mark12?

In my view, the most likely use of these non standard fittings is to support or vibration damp a piece of experimental equipment, such as a gunsight. I am thinking here of short tubular stays with pieced and flanged ends with slots that are clamped by the butterfly nuts.

The exterior mounting looks very similar to one found on an old Harvard front screen assy – used for mounting a ‘rear view’ mirror – dunno whether that helps but its pretty bloomin similar!

I read somewhere of one of the PR variants where the canopy was bolted shut ! …. perhaps to improve pressurisation. The upper butterfly screws might have something to do with that. The sidescreen one does look like something to do with a sun filter.

Theory #1

Hello Tony

Could these mounting points be for orange transparent screens that were fitted to several types? I have seen these on (not surprisingly) the Hornet and Piston Provost for example.

…and that sheet metal bracket fixed to the top of the Armourglass casting, equally puzzling.

Nothing in the Mks 21, 22, 24, 45, & 46 Pilot’s Notes.

sure you are right….but normally after 70+ views someone hits it! I have never seen a screen with the butterflly arrangement and the side clips…thought it might be some kind of screen attachment (anti flash), just waiting for a Spitty guru like Bruce or Mark12 to come this way!

Not for long. Give it a couple of days at most and I rckon some kind soul will give you an answer. People really are amazingly helpful in answering questions on this forum. There is a fair bit of information I’ve obtained that came from asking questions on here. Thanks to all those who’ve patiently answered my stupid questions over the years.
