Just switched on half way through “The One Show ” to see Dan Snow diving on Sunderland T9044…Is this part of his upcoming Tv series ?

Yep absolutely bang on Pondskater, the S.25 Sandringham is a civil conversion of the S.25 Sunderland of course, and the S.45 Solent a different design, if similar looking.
I’m being pedantic as these lovely old ‘boats always seem to get lumped together but deserve recognition in their own right, bit like lumping Lancaster, Lancastrian, and Tudor together.

On iPlayer for those in the UK (or using a UK proxy):

Nice little feature and good to see Wing Commander Derek Martin again doing an interview. Very interesting gentleman.
They did say three Sunderlands survive, which is fair enough – esp if you add the word military 😉

I’m waiting for iPlayer to release the programme so I can see it.

Me too – I walked into the lounge at my mother’s care home, where the poor old souls who aren’t too far gone get parked in front of the TV,just in time to catch the magic word ” Sunderland ” and register what programme was on.
I’m delighted that the Sunderland in Auckland is finally under cover, after 44 years exposed to the weather :

Pondskater,
This list was purely from memory.
Yes, the Goose ended up in Oregon IIRC, but I seem to remember the an article about the the San Francisco “Solent” making a big journey on top of a barge some 10 – 15 years ago. For some reason I´ve probably mixed things up!
Sadly my list was from memory too 😮 The San Francisco Solent was moved by barge across the bay. Your memory is fine.
It could be argued that there are only three Sunderlands existing – since the Florida one is civil converted. The definition doesn’t matter too much here – the important point is they are all MkVs from post war use (two from French and one from New Zealand Air Force)
T9044 is a MkI and a unique time capsule survivor – more info from PD Sunderland Trust. I’m waiting for iPlayer to release the programme so I can see it.
Amarok – would you credit the photographer and source of the photo you posted please?

It was an interesting snippet,at odds with my understanding that it was fairly complete and they were going to raise it. The programme showed that its fairly well gone and the museum is bringing parts up but have no plan to raise it.

The Short Solent III G-AKNP “City of Cardiff” featured in Indiana Jones – Raiders Of The Last Ark (not Last Crusade), but the flying shots were a model. A classic case of using a 1940s aircraft in a 1930s movie.
However a Solent isn’t a Sunderland and is drifting away from the main subject.

don’t think it made the journey a Boeing Clipper did over new York way ??
City of Cardiff was in the Indiana Jones and and the Aviator

Excellent little piece I thought, fantastic colour footage of early silver Sunderlands.
Surely Dan was right in saying that there are only four Sunderlands in existence?
The One Show seems to be doing quite a few aviation related pieces now and I think this is a great way of keeping the subject in the publics mind, many more people will watch 5 mins of this on a magazine programme than an hour long documentary competing with Corrie or something.

Three military Sunderlands (MoTAT in NZ; IWM; RAFM)
One civil converted Sunderland (Fantasy of Flight – Florida)
Two Sandringhams (Southampton and Paris)
Two Solents (MoTAT and San Francisco)
Oregon – isn’t that where the Spruce Goose went?
By: galdri - 27th September 2011 at 20:37
Complete Sunderlands/Sandringhams in existance are, as far as I know:
One in New Zealand
One in Hendon
One in IWM Duxford
One in Florida (US)
One in Oregon (US)
Wasn´t there one in Paris as well? Or am I making things up?

It was a interesting little piece but not greatly researched although i am racking my brain if there are more than 4 surviving Sunderlands?
