On the subject of sonar images…

Here is a side scan image of a Whitley 60 m down in the North Sea we are planning to recover.

Not really i’m afraid! This is an airfix Whitley sitting on my kitchen floor. One of the big brains on the Wix forum mentioned how easy it was to produce ‘fake’ side scan images using the ’emboss’ function on photoshot.

Just a bit of fun – looks quite convincing apart from the white bits – i’m sure this could be removed by someone who knew what they were doing.

Can we have a prize for the best fake sonar image?

If it winds up on some dodgy website we all know where it came from 😉

I am no Mark 1, Mark II or Mark III expert (unlike James) but for reference the Airfix kit was a Mark III !

I’m torn.
Do I want

a) a ‘new’ Sunderland? or
b) the Times to have been had?

Today, I mostly go for b)…

Just a thought, are the control surfaces fabric covered? If so why are they still there?

that sunderland pic

This might be along shot but with changing the “sonar” pic into a negative, if you look at both wings the floats are broken off right? Look at the left wing it appears to be half buried in silt at the leading edge. This would be characteristic of a float broken off. But, if you look at the right wing it appears to be sitting above the bottem with a broken float! Also look at the sharp edges of the right wing and trailing edges of both?!

[PEDANTIC MODE ON]But Airfix didn’t make a Whitley… Frog did![/PEDANTIC MODE OFF]
Looks like fun – except you still have too many delicate bits that would have gone in the landing visible!

Debris..

Looks like there’s a large bit of Debris off at the top right also.
Any guesses on that?
Perhaps that liberty ship which sank carrying the entire months wages for the 8th and 9th USAAF in May 1944.
Have you got map references Whitley/
I’m gone-it’s late.
