My dad was 13 at the time and acted as a runner in the Civil Defence. On the night the word “Coventrated” was added to our vocabulary, he sat with a driver on top of Barr Beacon watching Coventry burn. He was going in to Coventry with a lorry load of supplies the next morning but was prevented from doing so because of his age. He has never forgotten the sight and his anger towards the Germans remained strong for many years after the war.
