RE: One day…

i dont think you need worry about paint schemes on these Beaufighters yet – it’s a massive challenge just to get one airworthy.

RE: One day…

That would be very nice to see, Philo. She’s RD867, which was rebuilt at the same time as the RAF Museum’s RD253 – both of them are TF X’s, despite RD867’s all-black scheme. She’s currently sitting outside and looking decidely un-loved at Rockliffe, Ontario, as per the attached photo (I’m getting the hang of this now!). By the looks of her she’s been sitting out there for some time… 🙁

RE: One day…

Sorry Sadsack i have to disagree about the paint scheme, this Beau will be unique so its needs to be as representative as possible. I think it should rotated through the various schemes as is the Blenheim. Later this week i will hopefully post a picture of the last Beau i saw sat on its wheels at Abingdon in 1968, that was in black nightfighter scheme.

RE: One day…

The colour scheme I’d REALLY want to see is this – X7688, in her original all-black or later grey/green night scheme and authentic 153 or 29 Sqn codes, taxiing out for her first flight. I really don’t care where it takes place, I’ll still be there come hell or high water. 🙂

As for the photo, it’s allegedly a Beau 1F (although if you look closely, she looks like she has a dihedral tail which makes her a mark VI), and it was taken in Malta. I don’t know a great deal else about it, as I shamelessly lifted it off a website I was looking at last night. Well, it seemed as good a test shot as any… 😉

RE: One day…

Which museum was that, the ex Huttlecote ones?

for my option I’d like to see the Beaufighter ia completely ficticious paint scheme, which would shut purists up completely – it would have full weapons load and awesome nose art!

I heard sombody offered them a rock a few years ago – they just need 13 more!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-12-01 AT 09:55 AM (GMT)]Thats right mdina glass factory was made from one of the old hangars. (was there last month) The museum are always looking for aircraft how about the now defunct jet age museum aircraft being sent there, most of the aircraft represented there spent some time in malta. Just something to think about as I HATE to see classic planes rotting. 😉

RE: One day…

When we do see a Beau taxying out at Duxford, what colour scheme would you like to see?
All black night-fighter colours, Far East Scheme, or my favourite, the North Coates Strike Wing, complete with R.P’s?

RE: One day…

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-12-01 AT 10:22 PM (GMT)]The strip you talk about is Raf Ta Qali just outside Mdina. it was an Raf base up until 1979 when the british pulled out. after that the base was turned into a craft village and a few years ago an air museum opened as well. The main runway is now part car park and vineyard. aparentley a few years ago a lybian aircraft landed on the disused runway by mistake almost killing a few children who were playing on it. hope this helps.:-)

Yep – thats the ‘silent’ city of Medina in the background . I think this is a dispersed strip from memory but I will check. Certainly the is no strip there now.
