RE: One for Lancman
Good plan! I don’t personally know of a Lanc-based forum online, so it would be nice if that one kicked off a bit more.

RE: One for Lancman
Hi Peter-I think the trouble is, no one knows that it’s there! The only mention of it was a TINY print of the address on the bottom of the cover of their last journal, though I’m assured that it will be given a proper feature in the spring issue this year.
The problem is two-fold-in my view, they’re not at all promoting it well or in the right places, and, dare I say it, a LOT of the Linc Lanc members are of the much older generation who might not have net access, shall we say…

Ant.
I was given the impression that the ailerons were going to be refitted next month before the weather turns. If they are already fitted thats great!
I have attached a photo of FM212s cockpit to compare with FM104. All the more reason to have her taken down i think.

RE: One for lancman
Hi Peter,
I’ve been informed that FM212’s ailerons have already been put back in place,so this is good news for her general appearance.
I know she does get an annual airing, but this really isn’t enough. In the long term, the elements will win and the Lanc will end up in poor state no matter what you do.It’s got to be brought indoors. All it would take is one serious storm to cause serious structural damage or even tear her off the perch completely. Not good.
Added to this, there are already concerns about the condition of one or two of the engine bearers, one of them showing obvious cracks.I did mention this in a letter I wrote to the Windsor authorities, and pointed out that if an engine fell it could seriously injure members of the public, but I’ve had no reply from them.

RE: One for lancman
Good pics of FM104. dad and I were in charge of removing her engines and props. she does look very tired but at least she is recieving some tlc now. Heard that recently they are restoring the front gun turret and have also removed the trailing edges of the centre section wings as they are concerned about the corrosion on the main spar.
Fm212 although still outside on her perch(lancman) still recieves a regular airing and work day. This fall should see the newly restored ailerons refitted to the aircraft. It is such a shame for anyone who is in the area and can gain permission for a looksee she is 90% complete inside not like fm104.

RE: One for lancman
Thanks for the pictures, looks like they’ve got quite a job ahead of them.Makes you realise what a state a machine get into when you stick it out on a pole for a couple of decades.
I’ve been in touch with Ed Curnette of The Windsor Lancaster Group who’ve been trying to persuede the authorities to remove FM212 from it’s display plinth in Jackson Park,Windsor,Ontario. The group have run into problems because of opposition to the move, the majority of people seemingly thinking that it looks nice where it is. Frustratingly, many of these folks are also veterans, and as they are not pushing for the machine to be restored, there she sits. It’s quite surprising how many people don’t realise just how inadvisable it is to keep a Lanc on a perch.

Lancman.
You could always ask those nice people at Elvington to build you one….
Are you guys talking about the Australian ‘George’? If so try the website for the Australian War Memorial.

I’m in the same position as you re. ‘George’ mate! I’ve seen the dismantled pics too, but don’t know anything beyond that, sorry!
Ona similar subject, it’s good to see ‘Sugar’ at Hendon being worked on, even though she’s still got her tail on that ludicrous perch. I wonder exactly what condition her structure is in though-she’s mighty old now. I wonder if it might not be better to temporarily move her out completely and give her a decent once-over, rather than doing little bits here and there?

You’re right about that. I think I’d be grinning like the village idiot, too.

RE: One for Lancman
After all the history of nx611 is a lot more interesting than ‘474 – I think ‘474 only went overseas once, where as Nx611 flew the record for a lanc, am I correct?
The pic was a lot better but as they can only take 75k (come on admin, at least double it) I had to decrease the colours – shame!
The pic was taken on her first taxi run back in 1995.
