Just pragmatic, I guess, not elitist.
I was a local resident when the opportunity arose to visit the Olympic Guardian Typhoons….found out about it in the local paper, limited numbers, but a well organised few hours meeting the Typhoon pilots, poking around the aircraft in their temporary tents and chatting to the Communications/Queens Flight crews. And that needed security vetting and limited numbers of visitors. I simply don’t think the base and more specifically the local environs would cope with the huge influx of the public.

Quote from the newspaper link at the start.
The families Day just gone at Northolt was open to, not only service personnel, but local residents and those of us ‘enthusiasts’ who have supported the night shoots. I’d be surprised if it was open to the general public.

sounds very Elitist…

Quote from the newspaper link at the start.
Once arrangements are confirmed it will be publicised and our community partners, residents’ associations and so on will be informed and included

Hmm. If you thought Duxford was bad traffic-wise last Sunday, I would hate to think what Northolt would be like, adjacent to the A40 with limited airfield access, in deepest suburbia. No naughty fields to speak of either. It’s a very attractive and historic proposition, but logistically tricky I would think.

The Northolt event is a great idea….as long as it doesn’t starve other airshows that are taking place on the same weekend of the chance to book aircraft. Especially those at the opposite end of the country like the Ayr/Prestwick or Port Rush shows that are scheduled.

Last BoB station? What about Middle Wallop…altho’ in Army hands still very much alive.
How about Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire, still in use as a gliding field still with a
grass runway ?

It will be interesting if the date clashes with Duxford.
Makes sense to do both venues, the aircraft are all airborne anyway i would think it’s only a few minutes flying time and could also help with any overcrowding.

Nah there won’t be anyone on here interested in that.:)

Northolt Spitfire Gathering 2015
I noticed on another site that a display is being planned at Northolt for next September gathering together as many airworthy Spitfires as possible to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the battle of Britain! Thought the news might appeal to some!

With luck there will be a huge influx of airframes shortly.

Nicely done though lol

Northolt area is pretty built up and not an ideal site for a flying display, though there is open space to the west and south. However, I would doubt that a Duxford-style storming tail-chase would be on the agenda.
If they did gather a couple of dozen fighters, a mass formation would also be difficult to launch from Northolt as they would have to go quite a long way out to form up.
Probably easier to launch elsewhere and arrive in formation, and the convention seems to be individual flights of four aircraft.
The obvious place to gather and fly in from is..well….Duxford.

I think there were 20 at the 2000 60th Anniversary as Roger mentioned. Perhaps more at the 50th in 1990…..?
I think it was 20 in 2000. I’ve got photos of them all somewhere.

Both, I’d imagine. There is easy access by road, there’s a bus stop nearby and a tube station just up the road (not many airfields you can say that about). But just about every event they’ve had, in recent years at least, has been limited ticket entry.

If the 109 E from Canada has returned to the UK (as posted elsewhere) would it be politically correct to allow it to partake in the anniversary? I see no reason why not
What is Northolt like as a venue? Is there easy access by road or are we looking at a limited ticket affair?
