This week Im hoping to hop the few hundred meters down to the runway and take a few pics at GVA (im now back home, after a quick hop from southampton parkway)….i’lll hopefully get to photograph the Thai “Royal Barge” 744, cause it has been hopping from zurich to GVA and then back to zurich on its way to BKK…

You are correct, Mongu, as these were also the only 2 passenger airlines in the U.S. to order the -400’s. The ‘original’ 747 giants, PA and TW, are but a memory and CO retired their few ‘classics’ about 5 years ago.

They’re not very popular these days with American airlines it seems. They appear to prefer 767s and 777s. I think only Northwest and United still have them?

Indeed a ‘rare’ sight nowadays, but surely not between 1970 and about 1988ish. I’m not sure exactly the year AA ceased 747 service, nor do I know why. I’m going to take a guess, and assume it had something to do with the deal they had with McDonnel Douglas at the time they ordered the MD-11. Delta was another carrier who operated the 747 early on, but they got rid of theirs even sooner than AA got rid of theirs.

How come AA stopped using the 747?

The KLM could not be missed in this threat, so…………..

I wish AW would do a feature on special paint schemes. I’d love to know which lucky paint shop gets to do them
