Hi.
Can anyone who knows their way around the front end of a Merlin tell me the name of the tapered rod (Circled) and its function ? It has a square nut locked with wire on the outside of the engine and a small flange on the other end.
Thanks in advance.

“Two massive oil jets squirt oil into the reduction gears at the point of engagement, so it’s not a question of too little lubrication.”

I should have phrased that better.
I was wondering why there were two oil jets, and two different ones at that?
Anybody know?

Any idea why the two oil jets?

A lot of pressure between those reduction gears.

As an educated guess I would say itβs an oil spray jet to lubricate the reduction gear (or bearing).
In your second photo there appear to be two similar (hollow) rods and they look in the right place to spray oil between the gears as they mesh (and onto the bearing).

I’ve been thinking and I reckon it could be something like a mechanical rather than hydraulic pitch control for the prop. I don’t know much about the technical side of aereo engines so I could well be barking up the wrong tree(or just plain barking and out of my tree)

Thanks for the reply.
Not sure, the tapered part seems to be inside the reduction gear. The photo is from a crashed (I think) Mustang in a very good local museum.

Attachment point for an ancillary item? Or if it’s driven then it could be the drive for an acillary
