One for the 'Roundel Police'

I know the party, I know the date & location, but what of the flying machine?

If this is a DFS108-68 Weihe – and only 6 were initially used post war by the gliding clubs which eventually became RAFGSA/RAFGGA – these were surrendered in northern Germany and Denmark

There is a picture of what I suppose is likely to be this same aircraft given the small number used – with no roundel but marked “F6” in the “normal” position on the fuselage between wing and tail in the Fassberg Gliding Cub hangar on page 143 of “War Prizes” – (Phil Butler/MCP)

That F6 ties in with the alphanumeric system used to identify RAFGSA/RAFGGA bases and aircraft

Ah! War Prizes. I hadn’t thought of looking there. Yes, most of the gliders have the roundel on the rudder…so this was normal practice.

Here is an adjacent image on a page headed ‘RAF Fassberg – 135 Wing – ALG B152’. The photo is captioned ‘Dual in a Kranich sailplane – Ex Luftwaffe’.

Does that mean the dog (looks like a small Alsatian) was a war prize too?:D

There were a lot of ex-German gliders used by Service Glider clubs in Germany post-war – much ex-NSFK (Hitler Youth Gliding!) equipment used

There was one at Fassberg.
Most seemed to carry the roundel on the rudder

After much analysis, phone calls and questions to be asked, I have discovered that this picture is indeed…yes…an old picture. 😀 😀

Thank you I knew it came from a German design and couldn’t remember what type. Even so the likeness of the Weihe to the Olympia is noticeable.

No, the EoN Olympia was a DFS Meise:

There was a DFS Meise in a trailer at Perranporth for many years, stored after sustaining damage at RNAS Predannack with the ATC Gliding School.

It may still be there.

The Roundel is RAF, but why on the rudder rather than the fuselage?

Easier to stencil and paint on a flat surface rather than the fairly tightly curved fuselage?

Applied on top of a swastika?

I’m just dying to know the story behind the picture. Go on Mark, tell us! 😀

The three officers are RAF.

My uncle is on the left and from its location in the album it could be either Fassberg or Gutersloh. He was with 26 Squadron on Tempests, latterly the OC.

The date is 1947/48.

The glider is German and I presume ex Luftwaffe, but could it have been civil?

The dog is German. 😉
