One hour walkabout – Little Walden

Having an hour to spare during work I decided to go for a stroll along the remains of one of Little Waldens runways. And at the intersection of two runways I came across some sizeable sections of runway drainage, with the pipes still encased in concrete. There was also what might be a tie down hook – possibly to be sunk into the grass.
As I started to walk back a flattened piece of ally was spotted on the surface, and after some straightening out it appears to be some sort of backplate. Whether its Mustang / Havoc or Invader etc or just agricultural i dont know, but any suggestions welcome. The smaller piece was found further along!

There’s certainly plenty of rubble in those fields – generally we find it with models when the end up in the fields by accident!

I was invited inside when the Tower was first restored by the owner, who was using it as offices for his company. Roger something, and I think he was an architect, but I am far from sure. Very nicely done inside – but would have needed quite a few changes to make it suitable for living in. Good that it is still in use and keeping such a high value!

Presumably just the garden / area fenced off with it, which is still agood size. And of course the access drive off the main road. Its in a great position with a lovely view across the old airfield!

According to Cheffins estate agents the Little Walden control tower, now a private dwelling, has sold on again for £745,000 – STC. Extensively altered inside that seems a good price to achieve!

I used to live in Saffron Walden and ride my moped past there on my way home from work at all hours of the night.I always hoped the bike would’nt pack up there as i had heard the stories of the headless airman ghost
When we were kids and the control tower was derelict we used to go in there and on one occasion the door slammed shut behind us–we ran like rabbits.:eek:

Thanks for the replies everyone. Still its interesting to see just what turns up at these amazing old airfields. And standing at the runway crossover and looking at the control tower made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck!

Havoc Turbinlite – nice idea Propstrike lol.

I think that it might be a dead one of these:-

That makes sense. A Havoc Turbinlite.

Full link for those shades http://www.skinflintdesign.co.uk/store/ceiling_lights/retro_aluminium_factory_shades.html

Refers to them as 1950s, but I think that’s a guess.

I do not think it is a tie down hook Rob.
Tie downs are usually a sunken ‘eye’ – that looks more like a construction structural tie rod to me !

I really have no idea, but having knocked around a few WWII airfields I’d say that the casting detail in the concrete points towards being ‘properly’ designed and manufactured. Almost certainly not something that a farmer or builder knocked up.

Thanks for replying, boguing, and yes I think you could be right. Any idea if its a tie down hook in the other pic, or just something more mundane?
