Can anyone help identify this car in which Gustav was photographed driving in July 1913? I know of four other vehicles which he variously owned between about 1906-1914, but this one is none of those. This is clearly a sporty two-seater, but despite enquiries, it has yet to be identified. Is there anyone who can let me know the make/model of this car please?

I have now had two separate opinions back which both agree on the mystery car being a 1912/13 Vinot-Deguingand. Thanks for all your help everyone!

Why not try these guys, they seem good at identifying the unusual motors

Yes, the photograph on The Old Motor website is Gustav’s Mercedes racer, taken a year earlier. My comments with help identifying that car are included on the page. It’s just this summer 1913 car I’m stuck on.

Unfortunately not the same car, that one has chain drive.
Other photos of Hamel in the racing car can be found in the photo album on the RAeC website here

Ah, thank you, Mr McMagus, a true exponent of the black art! But what that proves is the truth of my grandma’s old adage, namely that you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
I regret to say that even in the photograph’s improved state, I can’t identify the vehicle. Maybe try a vintage motor car forum, Gustavsgirl – if you haven’t already done so.

That photograph does not make the task easy. Would it be possible to ‘photoshop’ it to improve the contrast and achieve better definition?
