Err…Garry…I think you’ll find as many positive posts as negative ones above. If you discuss western aircraft you’ll get a similar love/hate discussion. Now don’t get me started on the One Four Sick!!!

Yes… Soviet aircraft are all crap… you always hear about their wings cracking and needing to be replaced… no hang on that is western aircraft isn’t it?

I’m more concerned about the CRM of their crews than the equipment. The airframes tend to be cleverly designed but let down by crude engine technology.

RE: One of my favourite aircraft
I think russian aircraft have much more caracter, both the airliners and the huge freighters.
I think the safety of Russian aircraft are greatly underestimated. The design philosophy was just about the same as with their fighter jets. Uncomplicated, rugged and simple. Not a lot that can go wrong.
The reason they have a bad reputation is just bechause they look shabby and are badly maintaned nowadays.

Fly one? I’d be scared to walk underneath it!!!
Seriously though I’d love to have a crawl over one and see the design philosophy (or if there is one!).

What a beauty,so much character unlike some of the aircraft you find today.I don’t care what everybody else says,I would love to have the opportunity to fly on a CIS built aircraft.
Its western myth that all aircraft from the former Soviet states are bound to fall out the sky,its airline funding rather than the manufacturers.

Yeah, nice pics. I’m not overly keen on any of the Russian aircraft myself – not Iluyshin, Tupolev or Antonov. They just have this ancient look to them and cannot be compared to the work of Boeing and/or Airbus.
They do certainly have their own unique style, but not one that I like!

How to show the pics!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-10-02 AT 03:26Â PM (GMT)]The reason you have just links to images is because you are posting the address of the a.net page which displays the picture – you need to link directly to the image:
to find the images address, right click on the pic, click properties and copy the ADDRESS URL. Then just simply add it to the message in your post:
eg.

RE: One of my favourite aircraft
I’ve tried but that means i have to download them and then upload them directly to the forum right? The firewall here at work doesent permit that.
