Here’s your Staggerwing, just a different one…Embassy Colors, used in the UK during the war, known to have transported Ike while over there…now carries a fire engine ‘kill’ mark on it’s fuselage for a little incident it had with one of those machines back in the early 90’s…owned by Chris Jacobsen, Denver, Colorado. Need I mention which plaen I consider to be the most beautiful? Look to the left…

Whilst I’m sticking Mossie pictures up, how about this one for a real 1944 feel! My all time favourite piccie! Taken by Howard Lees at RAF Wyton, late summer 1944. I think the Mosquito B XVI probably belonged to 128 Squadron, but I don’t know f’sure.

At last! An excuse for me to bring out my 35-year-old photo of what I class as the most beautiful jet airliner yet, although the Comet 4 comes a close second!
Taken in Bahrain in 1968.
It’s a VC10 by the way for anyone who doesn’t already know.

I also said that beauty was in the eye of the beholder – so, if you think the B-36 looks beautiful, fine. However, I do not – but to me it is very impressive. I actually like it – a lot, but aesthetically, it does nothing for me.

In a similar way, I am extremely impressed by modern Formula 1 cars. However, to me, beautiful they are not (too angular and too many protrusions). However, for cleanliness of line, you can hardly beat a Vanwall or a Lotus 25/33.

As you can see, I am susceptable to smooth flowing lines – that’s why I like the DH Albatross. I also think the Vickers VC10 and Airbus A340 are lovely airliners.

Thats exactly what I meant too. Maybe I read Eric Mc’s post wrongly but what I thought was being said was aircraft like the B-36, Extra and Neptune were being chosen for what they were capable of rather than looks.

The list of aircraft in my first post is purely based on looks and nothing else.

I apologise If I’ve caused confusion or have got confused myself.

…but this one is the prettiest aeroplane I’ve ever seen. Especially in the soft winter sunlight at Old Warden on 17th December last year, which caught the yellow paint scheme perfectly, and illuminated that polished cowling. And to get up close, the leather edging around the front of the cockpits, the simple instrument layout, the lacquered wooden prop. Everything about V1075 just takes you back to the late thirties, to a golden age of aviation when even the military aircraft were colourful. Just a very pretty aeroplane, which is pleasing to the eye from every angle. 🙂

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me, I’m torn between two. Not just between two types, but between two actual aeroplanes and two words – beautiful and pretty.

This one, I think, is the single most beautiful aeroplane I’ve ever seen. This Spitfire Mk V – BM597 – is, for me, THE definitive mix of the iconic and the technical. She has that classic Spitfire shape and proportion; the pure eliptical wings, the beautiful shape and growl of the Merlin, the three-bladed prop, the three exhaust stubs either side, the rounded fin and rudder, the 1941 paint scheme. She is just… perfect. 🙂

Isn’t that a bit like saying the Spitfire was built for fighting so it can’t be a good looking aeroplane.

The Extra is built for aerobatics but it is still a good looking aeroplane, to me anyway.
