The Halifax explosion was the largest in the First World War, it flattened two square kilometres of Halifax and 1600 people died.
Amongst them was my ancestor Leading Seamen Claude Eggleton Rushen, crew member of HMS “Highflyer” who was aboard a whaler which went to assist. When the whaler was 100 yards away the Mount Blanc blew up, all crew were lost apart from Able Seaman Becker who subsequently was awarded the Albert Medal.

Just read it so working now, was there a ammunition ship that exploded in Nova Scotia, or Newfoundland during the 2nd ww or am I thinking of this incident?
