Operation Market Garden – Spanhoe

Spent a great day in the sun at Spanhoe today for the operation market garden event.

The event involved air displays mixed in with battle re-enactments. Many ground displays going on by re-enactment groups and trade stalls very different to your regular airshow and many visitors wearing period costume. Also present were many veterans who were involved in market garden missions.

Daisplay of the day for me was the opening memorial display featuring a C-47 and P-51D Ferocious Frankie. Very atmospheric.

Events like these make you appreciate the C47 more and more.

I can understand that the reenactors would have loved to see 1944’s aircraft only. Who wouldn’t? If accuracy of the displays is that important, the reenactors should have looked a bit more tired, dirty and desparate too.

What would the outcome of Market Garden have been, if the allies had operated Sabres by then?

Pitts S2

Common as muck…what’s that got to do with anything? I’m a traditionalist…if doing a 1940’s event, why have Pitts’ and Skybolts taking part (apart from the fact that the Skybolt pilot was “the main man” in terms of approving the display)?

Mind you, most of the re-enactment participants I spoke with were blown over by Mark Jeffries in the Extra on Saturday…they just didn’t seem to appreciate that it wasn’t from 1944.

What an excellent weekend…the Spanish 109 & Spitfire mock dogfight on Saturday was very good, as was today’s C47/DC3 display. The mock “ground battle” was quite good…but unfortunately a couple of the re-enactors got injured on the Saturday.

The Sunday Service & wreath laying at the memorial were very poignant. Several veterans from the States had come especially.

Present also were the Dutch & American High Commissioners, so it was good to see some enthusiasm from the political world too.

Rob.

p.s. Nice photos, Neal; any chance you could edit your pics before delivery so that they’re not quite so bandwidth-hungry?

Thanks.

No Vampire, the only other display was a Pitts S2 which closed the show but I didn’t take any photos of that.

I only heard about this event from a colleague at work.

Super shots!
I would love to have gone to such an event, but have never heard of it.
What is the best website, one that lists all aviation events?
