Since Australia has had the Herks for a very long time, I was wondering how it really stacks up against the Transall C-160, that is it’s nearest Western competitor.
Can the C-160 carry the same amount as the Herk over the same distance? Does it have the same maning requirements as the C-130? Is it’s flight performance, operational costs and role expansion anywhere near that of the Herk?
We don’t see the C-160 down this way at all, so I have only a books pics to guide me at to it’s size compared to the Herk. I’ve seen (not long ago actually) an RAAF Herk getting thrown around the sky like a fighter, with Steep banking turns and pull ups and dives that I thought the Herk would never make it out of, and there’s the legendary Bail drop that gets performed at every airshow. Can the C-160 do any of this- thought I think it’s given that it can do the bail drop!
