Opinion of male cabin crew?

What’s everyone’s opinion on male cabin crew, do people think of them as homosexual or not?

i myself am straight, but am considering applying for employment as cabin crew with easyJet, but i feel most male cabin crew are stereotyped as being homosexual?

so whats everyones opinion on this?

i am intrested in people who aren’t cabin crew as well as men who are!

But Steve, you’re old enough and wise enough to know when you’re doing the equivalent of making pork jokes in a synagogue so I guess it’s kind of surprising to see you doing that here.

To all you guys who even think there is any kind of issue here:
Bloke A (heterosexual) goes to work in his factory, etc Monday to Friday and saves for ages to have a holiday away from the UK once or twice a year where he pays through the nose for the privelege.
Bloke B (also heterosexual) work IS the holiday (albeit with a fair amount of hard work to get to that position and to get to that destination) but now he is being paid to be there in the company of many other young, attractive people (if that is his/her thing).

The cabin crew scene is littered with straight guys who you’d think would never do this job who initially took loads of stick from their mates when they joined. The interesting thing is that it never takes long before the guys who get left at home realise that their mate actually got it right.

I don’t think that the topic was supposed to be funny, and I can’t actually decide if comments like shirt lifter were supposed to be either, especially as there has been no word from the author of those words…if I had written a potentially offensive comment and people had picked up on it, I would have made damned sure I put it into context, probably by saying something along the lines of.. “it was taken out of the context in which I meant it, apologies if I caused offense” etc etc. But nothing!

You have to recognise that comments, being read on here COULD be taken as offensive. Many users don’t know each other on here, and could walk past each other a thousand times a year in the street without realising. So how we can all be expected to KNOW that someone was only joking is beyond me, without context.

As for people coming on saying..”but I have lots of gay friends and talk this way to them.”, well that’s absolutely fine and dandy for you. Putting my head above the parapet, I admit, I am gay, and most of my mates are straight laddish guys, who also make such comments to me, and I brush them off because I know the context in which they are used, I know them, they know me. I would actually be pretty pi**ed off if I knew they were referring to any old random gay person as a shirt lifter because that person will not necessarily know the context in which they are using the terminology.

I think that it is probably difficult for many users of this forum to understand…for the reason that they are likely to be straight white men, funnily enough, one of the only groups on this earth who are difficult to insult, because for many years they have been considered the superior norm (I say superior to put it into context as to why there are derogatory terms around for women). So, if you fall into this category, then just think a little bit next time about what you say, joking or not, you may not understand the effect that such comments can have on people, as its probable that the shoe has never (and will never) be on the other foot!

I have to confess, now that the topic has been continually discussed, I think it would have been nice for a Mod to at least make comment about “being careful not to offend anyone” rather than certain mods suggesting that people are taking it too seriously.

Sorry if this seems a bit straight laced for some of you, I like a joke as much as the next person, I also dislike being insulted, the problem is, I can’t always tell with written words, from people I don’t know, what context is being used!

As Allen pointed out people take themselves far too seriously..my quirky sense of humour strikes again.. i can assure you no offence was meant by me.. most people on this forum should know my sense of humour by now

Who exactly do you believe is going to “stereotype” you, if you take this job ?

I think the real problem here is that you lack self-confidence – and if you have such little self-confidence, then you will inevitably fail at the job as you will spend all day either staring at the “homosexuals” or acting overly “male” to satisfy the people you believe are stereotyping you.

Just apply for the job if its what you really want to do and when you get there, treat each individual based on how you find them – i.e what they actually say and what they actually do.

I believe your problem is not what others may think, but what you think of yourself.

Michael

PS for the record, i am not gay, and am not some gay rights campaigner. I am just not bothered by “homosexual cabin crew”

Fair points RDC, and rest assured no offence is intended by me. I will however continue to suffer from an inability to take life too seriously and that my friend is just the way I am…

im 6″2 so im very close to the maximum height, i work on and around aircraft on a daily basis and i don’t have any problems on the aircraft except walcking into the top of the door frame, (Damn that hurts).

have you not tryed Monarch?, they fly quite large Airbuses don’t they have more headromm lol

the A310 that comes into NCL to do the sanford flight is friggin huge it barely fits the stand, i think its the biggest aircraft that comes into NCL other than the 767 (seen once in the last 3 months, or the 747 (landed couple of times, but not seen by me :@)

No i havent , i know their are a few airlines that dont actully state a max height , although being 6ft 6 does cause a problem.

OneLeft and I 😉

1L.

That’s that great film about two male cabin stewards who share a run down flat in London, one of whom has a complex about being perceived as being gay. The other one obsesses about promotion whilst drinking a lot of gin…

Isn’ it ??? 😉

Steve I disagree

When on a long haul flight I wanna see trollie dollies 😉 You have to have some eye candy on a 21hr flight, it’s terribly tedious otherwise 😀

Hi

forget all the stereotypes about cabincrew. I for one feel happier if their is at least one male as part of the cabin crew on a flight. Cabin crew are not trolly dollies they are in the cabin to keep you safe if there is ever an incident. If you need to be hauled from your seat and thrown down an escape chute then a strong guy is just what you need. Keeping us ‘self loaders’ fed and watered is nice but when it comes down to the crunch cabin crew are here to save your ass not kiss it.

Apply and to hell with those who mock you.

Steve

Homer

Go for it mate, I am sure you’ll have the best time of your life. Male cabin crew are perceived as being gay yes, and I am friends with a gay cabin crew member with Virgin Atlantic, but in today’s accepting society you should be able to do the job and not have to worry about the comments.
Once you have been doing the job for a year you’ll grow a thick skin and brush off the comments. Your only concern will be how many times in a week you would have said “heard it all before”

Good luck and keep us all informed.

In my own personal opinion (for what little it’s worth) it looks like one or two people need to ponder the difference between celebrating diversity and imposing conformity.[/COLOR](Mod hat back on)

Finally, this post should be pulled, even though its genuiness was obvious, it just has no place in a forum belonging to a publishing company with the reputation and stature as Key Publishing.

No offence taken, but i find the replies to this post have relaxed my fealings baou the subject and i have considered my options and decided to put the application in, (just waiting till tommorow to confirm one last reference), without this post i don’t think i would have considered submitting an application.

so i thank everyone who has contributed to this post.

Honestly, and no offense to the author as I don’t believe any was intended, but I can’t believe this is even a topic for discussion in 2007. Are you going to avoid a role that my be historically held women, such as a nurse, because of public perception? Or a roles traditional held by persons from other races or ethnicities (can’t even think of any actually)?

As for political correctness, I agree, balance is required. But this is a public forum attended by people from around the world, and “shirt lifter” just isn’t appropriate. Again, would the same be said about women or visible minorities?

Has there ever been a survey or study of homosexuals in the aviation industry? Not to my knowledge. These observations are perceptual, not factual (regardless of first hand stories – there are gay men and women in every profession).

Finally, this post should be pulled, even though its genuiness was obvious, it just has no place in a forum belonging to a publishing company with the reputation and stature as Key Publishing.
