Original DH airframe / Engine Manuals

.
I have bought a few gems of these on ebay over the years, and am sure they are becoming scarce in the UK second hand shops etc, but would anyone have a source to buy original copies of the following DH “Manual of Instructions”

DH 60 Cirrus / Gipsy Moth
DH 83 Fox Moth
DH 84 Dragon

DH Gipsy I and / or II Engines

And although not DH, an ADC Cirrus Engine Manual

Yep!

Best guy I know is Brian Cocks, who is a specialist second hand aviation book dealer. He advertises in all the mags, and I am almost certain he has all the manuals you require!

Graham could you PM some contact details for Brian Cocks shops, ie Telephone, Fax or email details? thanks.

I’m looking for an ADC Cirrus Manual too. Doesn’t necessarily have to be original, a copy will do – digital or hardcopy.

Hello Paul, and welcome to the forum, good luck with the Avian

copies of the ADC and ACE Cirrus Manual’s are readily available, I have a copy of the ADC mark II manual somewhere.

http://www.aircraft-manuals.com/cirrusadc.html

http://www.esscoaircraft.com/Cirrus_Engine_Instruction_1929_p/30391.htm

http://www.eflightmanuals.com/detail/itemList.asp?cID=4530

Original Manuals, and the engines themselves are much harder to come by.

I had a mark II crankcase that I acquired from Hughes Trading many years ago and later swapped it overseas for a rare but incomplete 60HP ADC mark I engine which unfortunately has been sectionalised. I am trying to collect parts to complete it as a static display and consequently have been chasing parts all over the world. It differs quite significantly from the later 90HP mark II.

I did have details and photos of a Cirrus mark II for sale in South America, not sure if I still have the owners contact details?,
(The ADC Collector I was swapped my mark II crankcase to in the UK was also pursuing it, so I suspect it may be sold).

I have had some leads and photos on some ACE Cirrus engines in the USA via Barnstormers, but didnt follow them up, but they seemed easier to track down than ADC engines? (perhaps the UK scrap drive during the war consumed them more readily?)

ADC Cirrus Engines and parts are very sparse in Australia, I know of two display engines in museums, and of course there are some aircraft containing engines as well, but not many that are loose and available?

Attached are some pics of my Mark I, and the Mark II in South America.

Thanks for that Mark! If the address for the South American fellow turns up, let me know. I have also been keeping an eye out for an ACE Cirrus as well. Early days yet and I won’t be needing engine right this minute.

I continue to collect pre-war de Havilland airframe and engine manuals and am now chasing their published parts and price lists and other documentation.

I recently purchased and received a 1933 DH84 Dragon marketing / sales brochure that came with some “loose-leaf” 193 printed article extracts from “The Sphere” and “The Illustrated London News” and “The Commercial Motor” along with a 3-view DH Drawing.

The cover of the book, and the drawing are both marked by hand written pen with “R Lindsay Neale” who it seems was a British Test Pilot.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Robin Lindsay Neale 1912-1949

Robin Lindsay Neale was born on the 24th January 1912 and educated at Caterham. His early business training was with the aviation department of Selfridges and with Brian Lewis and Co Ltd at Heston. He learnt to fly at Croydon in 1931 and, after a short period of association with Charmer,Gilbert Lodge and Co in 1935, set up his own aviation consultant’s business in London, under the name Lindsay Neale Aviation Ltd of which he was managing director from 1935 until 1940. uring this period he was also a director and test pilot of Dart Aircraft Ltd.

On the outbreak of war he joined the RAF,from which he was released at the end of 1939 for test flying with Boulton Paul Aircraft Ltd,becoming their Chief Test Pilot in 1945.

He was killed along with Peter Tisshaw in an accident to the prototype Balliol T.2. The aircraft had climbed to 14,000ft for some tests. The windscreen disintegrated and the aircraft dived at high speed into the ground.

Oh that’s great!
I couldn’t think of a better outcome for parts like that.
Best of luck gathering all the bits.

Andy,

As I said earlier my pursuit of DH Manuals grew out of my interest in the DH 60 Moth, and view that this is an important type in the early development of light civil, and private aviation worldwide and also here in Australia.

It was, like the Ford Model T, the type that made flying viable and affordable for private owners and caused the massive growth post WWI.

While I would love to own a flying DH60, I dont think I will be pursuing that outcome through a project restoration or purchase due to my other interests and commitments, and in anycase given these wings have already been retired out of a restoration, I dont see them ever flying again.

I have for a number of years been chasing a retired DH-60 fuselage that itself had been replaced by a new build structure into a flying restoration and so I had been keen to bring my Cirrus mk I together with that fuselage to form a static display outcome and so these wings fit with that strategy.

I am associated with two museums who both have an example of a DH-60G and DH-60M Gipsy Moths between them and hence I would hope to recreate the earlier DH-60X Cirrus Moth as an outcome, perhaps with the result ending up at another Australian museum that currently doesnt have example of this important type.

Nice!
I saw that advert as well Mark.
What are you planning to do with them if I may ask?

I’ve been working with my friend repairing / rebuilding two bottom planes for an 82A. They are a lot of work, but a marvelous bit of engineering in wood.
Next stop, fabric. Almost a shame to see that art work disappear under fabric.

I started collecting DH airframe and engine manuals due to my interest in the DH-60 Moth, and in earlier posts in this thread I have shown the early ADC Cirrus Mk I that I acquired through swap with a UK collector who wanted my Cirrus Mk II Crankcase.

While my main efforts in this space has been to complete my collection of manuals, I was fortunate back in 2016 to be reading the DH Moth Clubs “The Moth” online Wanted/for Sale listings looking for manuals for sale. and and spot the following advert.

For sale. A complete set of DH.60M wings from which all the metal fittings have been removed. The wings consist of spars and ribs only, no metal hardware. Suitable for patterns or hangar memorabilia. $100 (Australian) secures. No packing or shipping service available; for pickup only. Charles Edmonds, Melbourne , Australia . Tel. 04 2957 XXXX or 03 9736 XXXX. ( Australia .) E-mail: gipsyXXX@iprimus.com.au

I rang expecting them to be long gone, and apparently there had been lots of inquiries from the UK, but the shipping costs had been prohibitive so they hadn’t been sold.

So I found myself to be the proud owner of a set of original condition DH60 Wings.

Smiles

Somewhere I have an erection manual for the Albatross. Don’t get rarer than that! I must remember who I lent it too.

The DH Museum has a drawer full of these, but I doubt they have a full set.

I have been collecting original DH Airframe and Engine Manuals for the last 10 years (limiting my self to the pre-war types inclusive of wartime production of Moth Minors (Aust) Tiger Moths, Dragons (Aust) and Dominies).

They weren’t plentiful or easy to find even when I started 10 years ago although certain ones continue to surface occasionally on ebay.

Many of mine have come from Ebay, but also through purchase from specialist aviation book sellers like Bob Cocks in the UK (who is retiring at the end of this month, and selling his business to someone else who will continue to operate it), or through purchase from individuals.

I recently achieved my goal with acquisition of an elusive DH 83 Fox Moth manual that I hunted down and purchased from a collector in the UK only to discover it and the Dragon manual he also sold me were both inscribed inside as being from the Royal Flying Doctor Service at Conclurry in Queensland, (he had purchased it from a specialist book seller in the UK who had sourced them from Australia.)

Below are the ones I have relative to the DH60 Moth series.

So far, the only group I have found with a similar collection of pre-war DH Airframe and Engine Manuals is (not surprisingly) the Shuttleworth Collection in the UK.

They now have their collection catalogue online:

http://www.shuttlewortharchives.co.uk/svas-lookup.php?title=moth&book_id=&author=&publisher=de+havilland+&group=&order=svas_records.BOOK_ID+ASC&search_type=loose

I dont know if the De Havilland Aircraft Museum has a similar collection of such manuals? (but would expect them to do so)

Here is the earliest DH manual I have – the DH 60 X Moth (Cirrus Moth) rigging manual along with an ADC Cirrus Mk II engine manual

https://scontent.fmel1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/30813886_2056919431196273_637584547986990002_o.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=7d2293c4cfc1b47cd65fca5583b049b5&oe=5B662E1E

Here is the next oldest DH manuals that I have – the DH 60 G Gipsy Moth rigging manual along with an DH 85/100hp Gipsy engine manual (before it became the Gipsy I) – both manuals are still in the “card” based covers

https://scontent.fmel1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/30167248_2056920037862879_5654160322770714807_o.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=8e4ac5683e2721352a36fbe59ddc1fae&oe=5B57F400

the DH 60 G Gipsy Moth “manual of instructions” along with an DH Gipsy I engine manual and a DH Gipsy II engine manual – these manuals feature the leatherette covers that became standard for all DH Manuals up until WW2.

https://scontent.fmel1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/30072809_2056921154529434_4492439346555131641_o.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=9454fed55ab48ee19b5a04f74712798f&oe=5B4E8A6A

I am still interested in adding second/better examples to my collection and hence remain interested in:

Avro Avian (yes I know its not a DH type smiles)
ADC Cirrus Mk I
DH 60 moth – (anything)
DH Fox Moth
DH 60GIII Moth Major (I am not sure a separate manual existed?)
