My first Oshkosh – certainly a ‘wow’ factor for me!
Shared a School Bus with paulc but didn’t realise until I got back to the U.K. We have since met to compare notes.
I was at the end of a trip around Western Ontario, taking in the Norseman Festival at Red Lake with a good few floatplane flights en-route. Even had the enlightening experience of the right hand seat in a C310 (not on floats!) with only two greens… Happy ending to that tale – fault with microswitch/wiring, only traceable when safely back on the ground.
Having only the Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Oshkosh meant a certain amout of planning and a great deal of walking to try to get the most from my visit. (14.5 miles walked on the Saturday!) I did manage to fly in the Tri-Motor, B-17 and Bell 47 as well as blagging a ride in a Cub on floats. Many, many photos – still not sorted/weeded out into a reasonable length presentation, so friends and relatives are safe for the moment.
This was a trip that I had been promising myself for years – it did not disappoint!

I was there – the WOW factor was not as high as the first time but it is still an impressive event. Thought the warbirds were good but the warbirds in the Saturday flying display were a bit disappointing compared to last year (only 1 B17 flying) Highlight for me was a B17 flight but the Raptor display was excellent as well.
Hope to go back next year.

… I am worried about Janie!
Aw shucks!
‘Tis true – my comments are long overdue. Thanks for the filip. I’d have written sooner but I’ve had a busy month. I’ve:
Done the Ultimate High formation course – highly recommended.
Woburn Moth Rally
Edinburgh for tea, via Tibenham.
Jersey for the first time.
I’m taking the man from D&D for a spin on Saturday and I’m off to the Faeroe Isles the week after.
I had a fantastic show at Oshkosh. I met gbwez1 and Keble Martin at the museum. Both splendid gentlemen.
I have to say having spent some time in the museum it is definitely my favourite ever. Apart from being an exceptional collection, everything is placarded so well. That is an unusual thing to comment on, but well earned.
Keble also makes a damn fine service agent 😉 Do look him up if you’re passing Leicester.
So who else went? What did you think?
Huge thanks to gbwez for the terrific hospitality. I’ll be back.

Thanks for your update, but I am worried about Janie!:D She hasn’t commented on her visit and in fact does not seem to have spoken to the Forum since she returned or did she return?

A Final THANK YOU for all your information throughout the last year.
Myself and my friends had such a great time. We saw most of the Aircraft and a couple of shows including the Museum and the Seaplane base (which was really great).
Our packed full 6 days at Oshkosh was well plenty for us to which we are now all walked out and about to fly back to UK.
Cheers to all on the forum and any volenteers for a great week.

Its nearly time and we are in the USA after all this planning.
We visited the Retro Macdonalds as mention on the earlier list and we have stayed in Chicago Exec airport last night.
Today we are making our way upto Oshkosh.
Thanks again to all
We will be there on Saturday to welcome all arrivals.
Neat…..

I voluntarily dropped out of an offer of a ride in the B2O arrival from Rockford. I’m busy at Brodhead that day with a…erm…taildragger.
I’m looking forward to meeting some old (and some new) faces on Sunday at the Museum.
Also looking forward to introducing myself to Janet, gbwez1…she & I might have had discourse in another forum about an Osh meet.
On another subject, anyone going to the Vintage Picnic?
Of at 5am tomorrow to catch Chicago flight. See y’all there.

The Sea Plane base will be a must for us.
A tip I have heard is to find out when the Seaplane Aircraft flypast is at Oshkosh and get to the lake to see them depart beforehand. A tip I shall try to do.
Thanks all 2 days before we fly….
By: Keble Martin - 14th July 2007 at 00:21
I must disagree…I think the seaplane base should be on your list if you are visiting for the first time.
The seaplane base is on a different plane (pardon the pun 🙂 ) for several reasons:
It’s a LOT different to the mayhem of Wittman field
It’s a lot more relaxed & informal
It can be exciting (in its own way)..especially if the wind is up, so they do the take-off’s in the small bay
And it’s a lot cooler, so if the temperatures get up…go to the lake.
If you’ve never been to a seaplane base before, it’s worth spending a half day here.
On another note: Bring a hand-held to Oshkosh…listening in to ATC is an education.

Also The Seaplane base..
What is the busiest day to visit the seaplane base, does much come and go or do they arrive and stay all week.
I cannot answer much about the Seaplane base. I have visited it. It was relatively quiet, small and very relaxing from the hubbub of the show.
I would say that, unless you are passionate about seaplanes, I would not bother with it until your second or third year at Oshkosh. It takes several years to see everything at Osh. Taking out a couple of hours or more to go and see the seaplanes is not the most efficient use of time.
Have a look here for more info. http://www.airventure.org/2007/events/seaplane_base.html

Good spot on the time that pics was take as I was on the 1pm tri-motor flight which returned about 1:15. Pic taken on base leg before turning finals.
It is was easy to get to the other side of the airfield – terminal / basler fbo (not the dc3 facility that is elsewhere) Take the shuttle bus from warbird area and that will take you all the way round the end of 9/27 and along the other FBO’s etc and terminal. Bus goes outside airfield and stops at terminal allowing the aircraft parked on the area past the terminal to be seen. You will not be allowed to walk airside in front of terminal but just get back on bus and get off once past terminal. Long walk back though 🙂 Found all the people very welcoming in terms of being invited into hangars for pics etc.
Not sure which day I will do that side but it is best to do before flying display in case there is something good & before it gets too hot. Try and get a copy of the daily paper which will give all the flying display particpants.

Heliventure to Oshkosh
HeliVenture 2007: Helicopter Group Flying to Oshkosh From Paris
Several helicopter enthusiasts from the Union Française de l’Hélicoptère (the French helicopter association) will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first flying helicopter with a group flight from Paris to Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture 2007. “HeliVenture 2007” will depart Paris on July 14 and fly more than 4,600 nautical miles to Oshkosh with a planned arrival on opening day, July 23.
“It’s a dream to be in Oshkosh at the world’s biggest aviation event,” said Renaud Lataillade of the UFH. “Everything is going well, everybody is preparing the last details, and we’re counting the days.”
Their planned flight path will include stops in the United Kingdom, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and the U.S.-about 50 hours of flight time each way. Among the confirmed aircraft are two Squirrel AS-350s, a Squirrel AS-355, a Robinson R44, and an Augusta 109. Two fixed-wing aircraft, a Beech King Air and a Socata TBM 850, will also accompany the flight.
This journey pays homage to French inventor Paul Cornu, who in November 1907 flew the first rotary wing aircraft at Lisieux, Calvados, France. The machine, which had two counter-rotating rotors driven by a 24-hp Antoinette engine, lifted him about five feet in the air for one minute.
Before flying to Oshkosh on opening day, Lataillade said the group would arrive in Fond du Lac on July 21

Is it possible to cross runway to parking on the other side of runway as in the picture.
Ok, I guess I misunderstood your question (Maybe I still do).
I thought you were asking if you’d be able to shoot a similar photograph (like the linked one) from what would be the east side of 18/36, and I answered accurately: No.
The runway you can see in the linked photo is 9/27, and Janie answered accurately: Yes, you can access the airport from the north. Basler’s FBO, small airport terminal, and Week’s restoration hangar are all part of the north end of the field.
My apologies for compounding the confusion.

There is a possibility that the people are thin on the ground there because they were clearing it out, as the do, before the displays start. Or it may just be that most people were by the fence watching the show.
The first few rows of that picture is just a fraction of the warbird park. The mass of aircraft in the background is where they put the non vintage (60s-present-ish) Cessnas, Pipers, Beech Bonanazas etc. Some people camp under their wing there.
To get to the other side of that runway, it is quite easy to drive, but you do have to leave the grounds and come back in, but it is no big deal. The aircraft on the other side are probably (save for one hangar 😉 ) the least interesting there as they tend to be mainly modern day factory aircraft. Behind the camera and beyond is two miles of “Experimental” aircraft.
There are also school buses everywhere which will take you wherever you want to go (they have set routes) and an information desk and program which will tell you all about it.

[QUOTE=eurostar builde;1136324]Have been packing my bags this week.
Been looking at Paul C Pics
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=5873036&nseq=204o
What time of day was this picture taken, does not look to busy out on the airfield.
Is it possible to cross runway to parking on the other side of runway as in the picture.
QUOTE]
Shadows suggest early afternoon…1-2pm
This photo was most certainly taken while airborne.
No, the public is not permitted to cross the runways. You can drive around to the east side, but locked gates (and extra police during afternoon performances) will prevent you from entering the airport from that side.

You’re giving the game away 😉

I’ll be there too 🙂 You can find me in the warbird area most of the time.
Now that has made my day. If you ask very nicely, I’ll sit next to you on the flights out and back. 😉
