Osprey Aircraft of the Aces/Combat Aircraft

Wondering who all reads these titles in addition to me. I’m a big fan of the series, and I have been for quite a few years. My collection is as follows for anyone who might care:

I’m curious about what books you guys have in the two series as well as what you think of individual books (be they the ones I have or ones you have that I don’t) as well as what you think of both series in general. Any and all responses are greatly appreciated.

I’m currently in the middle of Soviet Lend-Lease Fighters of World War 2 and after reading the chapter on Soviet Hurricanes, I’m wanting to get the two other titles in the Aces series on the Hurricane. If anyone has read those two books specifically, comments on those titles would be especially appreciated.

RAF Mustang & Thunderbolt aces

I just picked this up, its very interesting, especially with some of the art work on RAF P-51’s that I had never seen before.

Going through P-36 hawk aces now, Battle Of France very interesting (especially early fights with Me-190 “D”‘s – Looking forward to the Finnish chapter as well.

Usual high standard, well worth a punt.

Have read quite a few, just finished “American Nightfighter Aces of World War 2” which is the first one that I have found slightly dissapointing – maybe the subject is not big enough but there seems to be a lot of detail on non-night combats in it. Generally I find their books excellent though and I like the fact that you can get books on subjects as focussed as “Griffon Spitfire Aces” etc.

I’ve think I’ve got something in like 15+ of them.

Good books.

Your mention of the Roc makes me wonder if any Defiant crews ever became “aces.”

.

If you have an interest – I can recommend

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Turret-Fighters-Defiant-Crowood-Aviation/dp/1861264976/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231147089&sr=8-1

In terms of losses & kills, a major learning experience for me. There is a “titles you would like to see” tab on the osprey homepage, not sure how much luck you would have !

As stated in my list, I do have the book on Israeli Phantoms, and it’s one of the best I’ve read. After finishing up the Lend-Lease book I’ll have to pick up the two books on the Hurricane.

I’d also like to see a Combat Aircraft book on the Swordfish.

I’ve got a few of them – obviously the Spitfire books, but I do have the two Hurricane and one of the Messerschmitt volumes.

I’m rather shocked at the lack of response to this thread though. I figured most folks either read these books or have heard of them. Are we in the minority perhaps?

I hope not – each to their own tastes maybe ! – I picked up the JU-87/Russian front one at the w/e which I’m looking forward to, Soviet lend lease I read before Christmas and enjoyed. I would personally recommend any of the Israeli Phantom, F-15 or Mirage ones, not the usual Israeli heavy handed security IMHO, Royal navy aces is also interesting, I never knew that a Roc achieved a kill (another gem I learned from these) I have a few more in my wish list, RA-5 units among them.

Interesting remarks there. I’ll have to get the two Hurricane books ASAP.

I like these publications, they are like extended magazine articles with enough room for decent artwork and pictures. If they have a limitation it is only in page size which restricts picture quality – but it keeps the cost down and if you shop around you can get bargin prices. I have the two Hurricane aces, both very good. I tend to learn “gems” that I knew nothing about and have posted some of these on the board before. I never knew the Chinese used Gladiators (the Gladiator aces book is another excellent one). The Iranian F-14 & Israeli F-15 ones are interesting, especially the early chapters on selection of the aircraft. I must have 40 or so of these and the only one that I didn’t enjoy was “Middle east air wars” – far too light and brief, maybe too much to cover in a small book.

I tend to buy them when my interest is tweaked by a magazine article or something on the history channel. After “dogfights” I got the two F-8 books and the Israeli mirage one as well.

Vietnam Skyraider and Korean F-4U books due in 2009 I think. My last cover to cover read was “Malta Spitfire Aces” – again, I posted a thread on this, some new detail such as a Spitfire with the canopy removed to aid visibility and the blue paint work. The Hurricane aces 1939-1940 shows a Hurricane with a “bubble” style canopy – again, totally new to me (artwork, not photo but still worth it)
