Other 'Flying Legends'

With the glory of Flying Legends 2009 almsot upon us, I thought I would ask: What’s your personal favourite ‘flying legend’, and for what reason?

Planes, pilots and notable gulls, all are welcome!

So, what is it for you?

For me, it would have to be the Mozzie for British, and the Mustang for American. As aircraft go, few are more beautiful and graceful than the Mosquito, and it’s one of the finest examples of Britain at its best. And the Mustang? It’s just like the car which took it’s name – sleek, fast, powerful and utterly, utterly beautiful.

Good choice Ollie!
If ever I win the lottery you will all know because that would be family aircraft!

I love the start with lots of Spits (and that is from a diehard Hurri-lover)…my choice would be:-
1. Spitfire
2.Hurricane
3. Me109E
4. Mossie
5. Mustang
6.Lanc

If I had the benefit of my having seen these….I would want to see:-

1. Hampden
2. Whitley
3. Whirlwind
4. Wellington
5. Me110
6. MB5

sounds like I need a B2TF DeL!!

It is disappointing that all these aeroplanes are designed to kill people. Where are the ‘other’ legends. I know that there is a regular feature at ‘Legends’ of the Dak and Ju-52 but other legends of the period could be featured too.

Regards

I was wrong about Sgt Hannah, the man you are really after is Sergeant Norman Jackson Put his name in Google and it will give you nightmares if you know anything about aircraft

I think I’ll do that too, actually – I don’t know anything like enough about the people behind the actions. Thanks for that.

but for me i would have to say the Sea Vixen. For sheer size, sound, features (folding wings, arr hook), raw power but also grace in the air it would take some beating.

Given my username, you would think I would have chosen a few that reflect the opinion! Yes, the Sea Vixen is a real beauty, I fell in love with it the moment I saw it on the ground – once I saw it fly I was sold!

And, of course, what better reason to love it other than it’s British? 😀

Thank you for the name Mr Verney. I have googled it now. It is an amazing story.
From your list of types it looks you must have some interesting stories of your own.

Now for favourite aircraft.
Because I had the dubious pleasure of sitting in them for too many hours but in order of frightfulness
Bristol Brigand (try the dive brakes)
Mosquito (try single engine overshoot at night)
Meteor NF14 ( try stall turns)

Can only be one, the Hawker Hurricane!

The first monoplane to join the RAF and the first RAF aircraft capable of exceeding 300mph in level flight. It shot down more aircraft during the Battle Of Britain than all other defences combined and the only VC awarded to a Fighter Command pilot was won by Ft Lt James Nicolson a Hurricane pilot of No 249 Squadron on August 16,1940.

Aircraft, I have to admit that these are my favourite legends in no particular order:
Piston Engined
Mosquito, Mustang, Fw 189 & 190D, Bv141, Macchi 200, Po I-15,P-38, Skyraider, A-26, F-7-F, Lancaster, Chipmunk, AOP-9.
Turbine powered
Hunter, Lightning, SAAB Draken, Harrier.
All for no other reason than I like them
My personal Legend among Pilots has to be Douglas Bader for his determination to fly again after what happened to him and the guy whose name I can’t remember who climbed out on the wing of the Wellington in flight to fight an engine fire.l

To me a ‘Legend’ should be an aircraft that is famous with the general public…something everyone knows about.

Sadly, that means some great aircraft…remembered by enthuiasts, but not the general public will probably get left off the list.

We know what the main AC would be…
With my thesis that they should be known by the public…that means different lists for the US and UK since they both have strong avaition heritages.

For the US…
DC-3
Piper Cub (though to the public, that means everything from a J-3 to a new PC-12 😀 )
B-17
P-51
B-52
747
Huey (though to the public, that means everything from a UH-1 to a Blackhawk)

Douglas DC3 – Venerable transport aircraft still in service today.

Good choice Ollie!

I thought long and hard about this, there are so many note worthy aeroplanes, but for me it is the Harvard, it was a ‘right first time’ aircraft that gave vital service for so many years. I’ve enoyed some time ‘at the helm’ of a few of these, and a Wirraway too, but have not allowed this to sway my choice of ‘legend’

Pierre Clostermann, Bob Stanford Tuck and Eric Brown spring to mind as real Flying Legends, now there is a list that will grow and grow…..

i’ve got the next list

Warbirds Allies

1 Spitfire (aint straight in the head if you don’t like the looks:dev2:)
And Mustang (it’s just isn’t fair to name either one as number 1)
2 Hurricane (It’s the eternal 2nd although it’s a wonder
3 P-38 Lighting (If i had seen it more often it would have been a number 1 i think)
4 Yak-3 (i’ve had the pleasure of see this one a few times and im realy impressed by it’s power and agility, to bad it is a bit stall sensitive and you realy have to work hard with this machine)

Warbirds Axxis

1 Messerschmitt BF-109 (It’s an icon what can i say although pretty tricky on Take-Offs and Landings)
2 Mitsubishi A6M Zero (Although this aircraft wasn’t as powerfull as the rest, it shure was a handfull for the USAF pilots)
3 well i don’t have a number 3 actually 😀

Jets Allies

1 Hawker Hunter (well it’s sexy and it’s a Jet)
2 F-86 Sabre (one of the first realy succesfull export aircraft that could fly faster then the speed of sound)
3 Gloster Meteor (a real nice looking aircraft but wasn’t as advanced for it’s days in compare off the above mentioned 2)

Jets Axxis
1 Messeschmitt Me-262 (The first Jet that saw war action, i wouldn’t have imagined what happend if the Germans won the war with this aircraft)
2 Mig-15 (A nice counterpart of the F-86)
3 Well i don’t have a Number 3 with this one Actually

But i would like to give the Vulcan an honourary mention because she did amazed me at Volkel and im realy impressed with the fact that the person who drew the Lancaster, also drew the Vulcan… That’s what i call a skilled people 😉

Legends favorites….Allison powered a/c

I always liked the NA A-36 Invader, the P-40 Kittyhawk & Warhawk, the P-39 Aircobra & P-63 Kingcobra and of course the Lockheed P-38.
Coming in very close behind them the Hawk 75 (not Allison powered of course).
The “whining” sound of of the Bell’s was interesting.
The history of the older a/c having survived the war & scrapping.
Perhaps I like them also since you don’t see these types very often.
In the end…..they are all great, be it Allison, Packard, Merlin, Wright Cyclone, Pratt & Whitney & Bristol Sleeve Valve engined aircraft.

Good choices TBAB… but for me i would have to say the Sea Vixen. For sheer size, sound, features (folding wings, arr hook), raw power but also grace in the air it would take some beating. As for continental types the Mustang is high up the list but again for me the F7F Tigercat would take some beating.. and probably for the same reasons as the Vixen.!
