Some of the movie studios used large American radials for creating wind on the sets of films. Seem to remember seeing a pic of a complete front end of a DC-3 complete with the two engines being used for the above. It was litrally chopped through the wings and fusalage at about front spar point.
I guess it was a good way of keeping the engines well mounted, relatively close together and with all the controls remaining in the cockpit.

A local building services company uses an ex Shackleton Griffon to test buildings for wind resistance. Ive never heard it running, but have seen it outside their building as it is mounted on a wheeled trolley.
