What with all this talk of Nimrod’s and VC-10’s being retired and their possible preservation has got me thinking… Which surviving aircraft has been preserved outside for the longest period of time in the UK.?
Duxford’s Shackleton MR.3 (1972) and Comet 4 (1974) both indoors at present.. and Brittannia (1975) must surely be amongst the longest surviving… but are there any longer term examples, such as at Newark or gate guards like the Comet at Lyneham.?

Don’t forget in a wider sense the likes of Shackletons and Beverleys spent the vast majority of their service life parked outside, so they would win hands down anyway really.

How about Fort Paull’s Beverley?
Delivered to Court Lines on 14th March 1973 and ferried to Hull on 30th March 1974

The oldest continually outside from NAM is Canberra PR7 WH791 (currently marked as WH792) – IIRC it went on gate duty at Cottesmore in 1972 as 8187M and came to Newark on loan in 1998.
Most of the earlier airframes at NAM i.e. Prentice 1967 (1990), Anson 1968 (1978), Swift 1969 (2004) etc (have been inside for several years).
Another thought – Shackleton WR977 might give the Canberra a run for its money as Ted Budden flew WR977 into Finningley on 9th November 1971 (cannot find a reliable date for the Canberra starting guard duty!) 🙂

Swift WK275 pre-dates most of those on external display as I think it moved to Upper Hill in 1968, long before most of the museums were around
Most of the Vulcans have now been outside since 1983, letters to flight International etc at the time said this was folloy and they would last may be 5 years.
The Dakota KP208 was at Aldershot from 1970 until its recent move to Colchester.
