It’s certainly a talent, although nowadays machinery helps a lot

Can’t remember if I read it in a book, or saw it in a documentary, but the story was that only one guy could produce the Spitfire’s fillet skin which blended the tail fin to the fuselage during the Battle of Britain.
It had a double compound curve, apparently very difficult to produce, and the line was that if the Germans had targetted him, it would have stopped Spit production!
It’s fascinating to watch these guys with their English wheels, special hammers, and bags of patience!

going back into the early 1990`s i was stationed at Coningsby. one of the griffon engined spits needed new engine cowls. a guy came in with flat sheets of alloy and made the cowls and scoops over the week “on site”. truly amazing to watch. i cant remember who it was which is a shame. the old cowls were skipped. i even walked by them whilst they sat in the metal bin and had a “””thought”””, unfortunately the thought went no further. ****** my stupidity lol
