Whilst conducting a belated ‘spring clean’ of Dam Buster Towers, ‘er indoors found a video buried in all the clutter, and when we put it in the VCR to see what was on it, it turned out to be ‘Over Here’ with Martin Clunes et al. I did’nt recall ever watching it at the time, so me & mrs Dam Buster sat down with a large bottle of wine and a bag of crisps to watch it. It was quite enjoyable in a quirky sort of way, with a bit of a sudden ending we thought. Well aware of some of the aircraft used in the programme, (Sally B, MH434 etc, ) but it left us both with a couple of questions I wonder if our well informed forumites could answer, so, apologies if all this has been covered before but here goes…
a) Does anyone know ehich village was used in the opening shots,
b) Which airfield was used as ‘RAF Lytchmere’? It looked spookily likie ex RAF BINBROOK, and given that ‘Sally B’ still looked to be in her ‘Memphis Belle’ scheme, this might fit in
c) Was the Bf 109 the Hans Ditte one (re-engined Buchon) and whatever happened to that aircraft?
d) Given the odd ending, was there only 1 programme, or have I missed any others?
Again apologies if this has been covered before, and many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give,
Regards
Keith 🙂

Just a heads up for those that may be interested in this series, the DVD is, according to Amazon.com, due to be released on Monday (11.06.07) at the princely sum of £11.99 (+ p+P). Probably be cheaper elsewhere………
At long last I can replace the taped copy I have been watching..(taped for my own use, never copied..just to advise the Copyright Police):D .

Keith.

Its a great shame that Over Here is not available on DVD, I guess there has not been a great demand for it to be released, Which is a pity as it was a good show, And i haven’t seen it since it was on TV.
I am a great fan of John Sullivan’s writing and would love to add “Over Here” to my collection with his other classics “Citizen Smith” and “Only Fools and Horses”.
We can only hope it will get released one day, After all its the perfect show Good writing, comedy and “Warbirds” what more could you want?.

Mighty Rod.
What you are suggesting is a breach of copyright and thus illegal.
I trust we will see no further discussion on the board of breaking the law and depriving the copyright holder of their rightful income.

Moggs you are absolutly correct and I sincerly apologise. Loose lips etc…:)
Would anyone please be willing to lend me their copy so I could watch it and then return it soonest? Much beer for the supplier:D 😀 😀
Hope this stays within the copyright directives.
Thanks again 🙂

Hello all, I do hope someone can help.
“OVERHERE” is a comedy I have been trying to get my hands on for a while now.
Would anyone be prepared to copy for me the full serial. Obviously all expenses would be covered for time and materials.
Many thanks

As one of the engineers on the OFMC Aircraft, and the Aerial safety officer during filming, the airfield was indeed West Raynham and the strafing sequence was filmed at Sculthorpe where we hangered the 109. I have a lot of stills and video shot during the filming and will try to post here when time and airframes permit.
The Spits and B-17 were based out of Raynham and we used a couple of off site locations in the area for some of the other scenes such as the House scenes where one of the Spits lands on the lawn, and this sequence has one of the lowest flypasts of a Spitfire over the lake in front of the house then overflying Geraldine James and the house.
Martin Clunes was a lot of fun to work with and a few beers were consumed.
Happy Days
God Bless Ray and Mark

I am sure that when I was in the RAF, one of the section guys told me that alot of the extras were RAF guys from West Raynham.

The five Spits (including their unit markings) were:
Vc AR501 – WO-L
IXb MH434 – WO-A
Tr.9 ML407 – WO-T
PrXI PL965 – WO-F
IXe TE566 – WO-P

Ahhh a ‘close to home’ thread, well sort of 😉
As I recall, it involved the B-17 and 5 or so Spits arriving at West Raynham one Sunday afternoon at around this time of year in 1995, the 109s came nearly a week later and were based out of Swanton Morley because of the lack of suitable grass runways at Sculthorpe and Raynham.
The countryside between Raynham and Castle Acre was used for a number of scenes, this also encompassed Great Massingham, there was one scene where the RAF pilot/motorcyclist came across the USAAF Pilot/car driver and one ended up in a ditch, all of which took place on the road which follows the perimeter of what was Great Massingham aerodrome.
When the 109s arrived at Sculthorpe, on a Monday IIRC (I’d bunked off college on the rumour of them coming), I was in place at the eastern edge of the East-West runway at about 9am and just soaked up all the superb Daimler-Benz induced noises for the day, unforgettable!
I spent many a happy day being overflown by Sally B while she was on approach, of which there were quite a few. Ray Hannah carried out one of his trademark Spit displays at least twice.
…it’s always handy to go down to the ‘local’ whenever a shoot is happening in the area, there’s always a helpful crew member there propping up the bar once filming has finished for the day, happy to divulge info for beer!
The pic attached is of Sally B when they were filming interior shots of the guns being fired.
All in all a very memorable time. Will the BBC ever release it on DVD???? I hope so.

A great mini-series. Annoyingly I seem to have lost or accidentally wiped episode one and only retain the second half in my collection sadly. So I too wish it’d come out on DVD. Clunes is such a great actor.

Very many thanks to all those who have taken the trouble to reply to my queries, all the information is gratefully received! 😀
Following a re-appraisal of the video tape (this time without wine!), we managed to locate the 2nd episode, which I must have set the timer about 7 minutes before it actually started, which explains the huge gap (or was it the effects of the large bottle of Hock)?….anyway, watched the final episode last night, and I enjoyed it, and so did Mrs D-B..especially when Lenko had the slight difficulty with the shutters!! 😮 😮
I will be transferring the programme to DVD later today.
Again, many thanks for all the helpful replies, and especially Moggy for the photo.
Regards,
Keith

Both the Hans Dittes ‘Bf-109’ and Black 6 were used for the strafing sequence, which I thought was filmed at Sculthorpe.
I saw both a/c at DX at the time of flming and they had been temporarily painted in a different colour scheme, I also seem to think that the ‘Bf-109’ had been fitted with a standard cockpit cover as well, yes, I did take some pictures of them at the time and will publish if I can find them.
I also have all 3 episodes on one tape somewhere as well.
I’m fairly certain that D-FEHD still had her ‘Erla Haube’ hood fitted.
sconnor, who posts on here quite a lot, has a trailer for his Messerchmitt 109 DVD which contains footage of both aircraft, complete with “Over Here” paintjobs. Fantastic stuff! 🙂

And if you do visit, don’t expect the pub on the main street to be the one where the interior pub scenes were filmed.
That was either a different pub or a studio set.
“What are these?”
“They’re ales”
“Oh, right. Hey Al, your drinks are here. Now can we have two beers please Miss?”

Neat trick! There were only two! 🙂
I’ve finally succeeded in getting my copy onto DVD
