Over Here ! Spitfire fly-past misses by a mile

All through the winter months, the good citizens of Chesham Bois (Bucks) Fete Committee begged and haggled to get a Spitfire fly-past for the parish knees-up.

Bang on 13.45 a Mk 19 appeared in the distance, dipped its wing and dived down…over Amersham. It certainly sounded good, roaring up and down the other side of a large wood. Then the resident band burst into life playing the Dambusters March (!) very loudly and badly, and so we couldn’t even hear it either!

Still, nice try.

Hey, come on guys. Let’s not knock them, we’re all human. Just remember all the times they are in the right place.

I’ve never been a fan of The Dyson Display Team- their routine sucks.

But seriously- are we saying here then that the mighty BBMF goofed up?!!!

A few years back a pair of F16’s from either the Belgian or Netherlands air force missed Biggin Hill and were observed on the horizon heading for Kenley.

Five minutes later they did a slow flypast down Biggin Hill’s runway…

Takes me back to 1960s B of B displays. Somehow the promised F-100 or F101 display team never became much more than dots on the horizon…

William

That had not changed by the 1980’s. At a RAF Halton Families day in 1984, the F-111 from Upper Heyford did his display over Aylesbury and in 1989 I saw two A-10’s from Bentwaters/Woodbridge start to do a display over Bishops Court. The pity for the paying spectators was that they were all at Newtonards airport for the Ulster Airshow, 30 miles away.

suggest Val puts in a least two more seasons on the Dyson before re-applying for flight duties.

Is it true the Dyson is to have new markings next year, & does it still have its original motor?

Geoff.

If it was a BBMF spitfire 19 it was VAL the cleaner who was flying that day and was’nt familiar with the area.

Hmm might consider putting up a Flak barrage over Amersham next time.

The question is…..to what event did the pilot in fact present his Spitfire?

The National Meditation Society Annual Gathering, perhaps?

Or maybe The Germany & England League Peace & Reconcilliation Rally?

The last BBMF display I saw at Southport (2004) was five Merlins and a Griffon, anyway. And they all arrived together.

Reminds me of the commentator at the Southport airshow. As the BBMF appeared he exclaimed that this was a rare chance to hear no less than 6 magnificent merlin engines and that he certainly couldn’t compete with them even with his PA system.

“So I’ll shut up now and just let you enjoy this magnificent symphony.”

“Here. they come… oh how wonderful… don’t they sound fantastic? The BBMF do a wonderful job keeping the memory of so many alive in the hearts of us all… what a sight…”

ad nauseum.

I heard a faint rumble and that was about it.

But isn’t that the British beauty of it all?
