Overprinted 5c/545 – what is this off?

[ATTACH]185085[/ATTACH] The bottom photo is the wing root control box used on Mk1 and Mk3 Stirlings.This early one has two hinged access panels with fuse boxes mounted on the top.The Mk 4 had no fuse boxes with a fixed(bolted) right hand panel and quick release left hand panel,the switches being located under the left hand panel as separate 5c/543 switches.On later Mk4 for some reason they went over to using the banks of switches.On the above Stirling diagram the box is situated in the area marked 15.

It is indeed Smirky,it is fitted in the wing root services box which is mounted in a difficult to photograph place in the top of the fuselage in between the oxygen bottle racks.it has a cover over the top with quick release fittings to release the cover you see to the right in the photo.I think I`ve only ever seen one picture of this box with the cover off so I can understand people saying it`s not Stirling but it is for sure,I will see if I can dig out a picture to show where it`s situated.I knew I`d seen one straight away as soon as I saw your photo as I also pondered for ages to suss out what it was for. basically General Services STB. inner and outer,under carriage motor,Wing and Fuselage Bomb doors MOTORS. I think Pagen did very well as your unit is the only other one I`ve seen besides my own,…let us know if you ever want to part with it !!

Got a pic. of one somewhere Smirky.On earlier aircraft they used to take the covers off the fuse boxes and leave them off to test essential systems by swopping fuses and looking for a drop on the voltmeter to ID problems.They added an extra panel with separate single fuse boxes on and separate overide/test switches.

according to this, its not Stirling.. but I do echo pageno1’s comments about it being from a bomber with wing and fuselage bomb doors. Halifax?

I had a look in my books and it is a modified general purpose Type B switchbox 5c/565. I dont have a listing showing what it was originally fitted to but I am sure A/M might be able to shed some light on it for you….

I would think that Gen is generator (ie engine driven generators) rather that General?
