…by yesterday’s commemorations, another aviation milestone achieved yesterday – Scaled Composite’s spaceplane was flown to nearly 70,000 feet and exceeded Mach 1, apparently the first entirely private venture aircraft to do so. It also suffered a gear problem on landing but is easily repaired.

As I understand it, it was the capsule – the combination was flown up to 48000 ft, the space ship was released and ignited it’s motor, achieving 68000ft and Mach 1.2.
This according to the BBC.
I have to say I have the utmost respect for Mr. Rutan.
