Overtaking

Hi,

Just now on approach to City I saw a BACON RJ overtake a small beech baron in the sky, and the baron was merely a few 100ft less – is overtaking a standard procedure on landing, this looked highly unusual to me, and what made me think it could be uncommon was the fact that as the RJ was descending into the flight path of the Baron it appeared to make a sharp turn to the right as if it was going around to 10, leaving the Baron to take 28, but the RJ was originally definately set for a landing on 10,

Any comments appreciated,

Wozza

Over the Eastern Seaboard on the way to MCO in February we ripped past a Southwest 737, a few thousand feet below us. We were in a VS 744.

when I was on holiday from college I used to visit my parents in Abu Dhabi who knew many ATCOs at the airport and one of them told me that an Abu Dhabi Defence Force Mirage had cut in front of a BOAC VC-10 on approach. The Captain of the VC-10 was furious and complaints were lodged etc but nobody ever found what happened (if anything). The Mirage pilots were a law unto themselves. I used to sit in the tower some mornings and on one occasion they informed the tower that 4 of the Mirages wanted to do a formation take off so two commercial flights had to hold while they taxiied up the whole length of the runway from the ADDF apron and got into position. this took nearly 20 minutes while they started up their engines and taxiied out. This was at the old airport not the newer one.

Nothing to worry about I’m sure – inbounds to LCY are controlled by Thames Radar and if the Baron was fairly close the airport that would be subject to control by Thames Radar too.

Sure it wasn’t just a flying pig wozza? hehehehe oh my that was bad.

I can’t see any reason why the RJ would need to overtake as such, Barons are hardly slouches in the air!

As for airline ops I’m not sure, but overtaking can be done, if my memory of air law is right (and I hope it is, im trying to learn the stuff) as long as its done on the right hand side ;). However thats just PPL stuff I’m looking at.

I’m not doubting your belief, wozza, but it’s incredibly hard for anyone to judge heights, especially relative to other a/c, from the ground. Those of us who do it for a living aren’t very accurate, and we’ve got a radar to ‘calibrate’ our eyesight.

There is no ‘overtaking’ procedure.

Of course, if the Baron was VFR, then they can get as close as they like, as long as traffic information has been passed.
