Oxford 13th June – what were they?

This forum seems to be able to answer the dumbest of questions I can put to it… So here’s another.

About 11.40 today. North Oxford. Two biplanes flew over flying North-South (ish!) just to the West of the city. By the time I’d grabbed my binos they were far too far past to get a good look. So… Two apparently identical single-bay-wing biplanes, appearing to wear full-height rudder flashes (but difficult to see whether they were RAF flashes or not). They didn’t look like anything DeHaviland, and didn’t make enough racket to be Stearmans. Anyone else se them, and get a better look than me? I’d love to know what they were…

Also, while playing cricket at Chalgrove in the afternoon (no sign of either Meteor – guess Sunday is their day off too), two single seater monoplanes went over in the distance making a rumble that suggested possibly warbirds, and a four-engined turboprop with a “horizontal” tail surfaces cranked upwards went over fairly high. It looked like the Vanguard elsewhere inn the forum – any of those still in the air?

Hope someone can help!

Adrian

Philo – spot on?

You could be spot-on, Philo! I guessed turboprops due to the narrow cowlings – but the Heron would fit perfectly. No plan view to hand, but I’m sure it had the right planform too. Someone else has identified the biplane and single-seater that also flew over the cricket match… but not the two aeroplanes that started me wondering! Ah well…

Adrian

adrian_grey, I think your 4 engined puzzle is now solved if you look at Mike J’s thread on Old Warden Moths, just forget the ‘turbo’ bit .

I saw 4x A-10 Thunderbolts over here on Saturday, flying in a finger four formation.

You are probably right, Mike.

Ta.

I will now amaze my fellow toxipiliologists next Sunday, with my arcane pointless knowledge. No change there then.

At Woodstock at 6pm, I saw a Pitts accompanied by a single seat single engined low wing type (Yak?) going North East (past Kidlington, over the circuit). Later – 6.15 or so I saw two biplanes, couldn’t ID them (too far) but thought they were too big and loud for Tiger Moths, too quiet for Stearmen – though that would be my guess – going East.

HTH,

Cheers

Amazing how often things are worked out here from various sources, spread around the country.
Gnat display at Donington was somewhere around 5pm, at an educated guess, so return Oxon area probably around 5:30. Does that fit?

Thats a good point DHfan, I didn’t see them that close and could not be bothered with my bins, so yes they could have been the Gnats.
They were tracking due south east Saturday afternoon.

Could the two Red Hawks have been the Gnats on their way to Donington? Were they close enough to really identify or just Red?

My weekend ‘spotting ‘ from my garden included, numerous Yaks in formation on Saturday heading westerly (oddly only two returned later in the day),two Hawks of the Reds (again why only two ?), a pair of Tiggies, a pair of Tonados……..hang on a minute was there some sort of avaition based Noah event on somewhere ????.
The Tornados are an unusual visitor to BZN so I assume they were involved in the Queens Birthday flypast as I also saw a Nimrod, another rare bird in this region.
I also saw what I thought was an E6 ?, is that the right designation ? very light coloured ,almost white 707/KC variant with an odd nose. Various other unusual airliner types into BZN as well.
Lots of GA stuff and some quite low approaches from biz jets ,en-route to Kidlington I assume.
adrian_gray, your 4 engined turbo-prop is a puzzler,I though I heard, though did see, one of the DC6’s but of course thats not a TP , nor is its tail as you described.

🙂 I thought i saw a Meteor fly over mine this morning, there was also a second jet flew over a while afterwards but it was a way away ,looked as if it could’ve been vampirish but that may be wishful thinking.
Can anyone confirm the Meteor over North Cambridge area heading south 🙂
