The Zero’s painted with the words ATAIU O SEA. Was that common to all British captured examples?
The IWM Lambeth example has those words painted on it, or at least I think it does.
It refers to Allied Technical Air Intelligence Unit- South East Asia.

If only that photo of a Lancaster in LW markings would turn up…
Not Luftwaffe…. but how about a Soviet one…..

(model converted from the old Airfix B1 many years ago).
Ex Operation Paravan – details were taken from Russian magazine ‘Mir Aviatsiya’…..

Peter Evens isn’t telling anybody but there are lots of captured allied and axis information and pictures on the Luftwaffen Experten Message Board! Just have to join, I believe…

Interesting stuff. I wonder how many of the Allied aircraft captured by the Axis survived until the end of the war, and what happened to them once they were back in the hands of their rightful owners?
Imagine being a GI, exploring a hangar on a freshly captured airfield, and coming across a B-17 or 2!

I especially like the Spitfire V with DB 605. I would love to see one converted, but I doubt anyone will do so. Due to the relative rarity of these engines it would be a lot more expensive to build and operate than one with a Merlin. But it would be a surprise and eyecatcher at every airshow, wouldn´t it be?

What’s the second-last aircraft in the lot, in German markings? It looks Russian, maybe?

I always think that the FW190 looks particularly at home in RAF livery.

Eric ‘Winkel’ Brown flew one (inevitably) once, but I think that was the only powered flight by a captured Komet and necessarily had to use the original, dangerous fuel. I believe there were some other flights made by unpowered aircraft

Did the allies actually fly a captured Komet ?
It must have taken a brave pilot, and did they use a different fuel ?

Isn’t it odd how “wrong” a type looks when captured and wearing the captors colours. The Zero stripped back to natural metal with the US star and bar looks particularly uncomfortable.
Thanks for this, very interesting.
