I haven’t received the latest FlyPast yet so this might be old news but in case it’s not…
the CAF will be rebuilding the P-51C recently wrecked in a fatal crash.
I haven’t seen any photos of the wreckage…does anyone know how much was left? In other words, will it be a rebuild or a “slap the dataplate” on all new metal project?
Here’s a news release on the effort..

RE: The photo above; 😡 Being the Crew Chief on the aircraft in question and a long time friend of Commander Hinz I find it quite tasteless and even offensive that somebody felt the need to post that picture to this forum. Other than its obvious shock value, it serves absolutely no purpose what so ever.
OK……Yes, we are in the preliminary stages of assessing the damage at this point and there are a significant amount of original 1943 parts that will be salvageable. Essentially everything from the cockpit on back appears to be repairable with the exception of the horizontal stab. Without getting deep into what’s good and what trash, the shop is without question regarding this as a restoration and not a “Data plate” rebuild.
