Does anyone have any info on what happened to the P51H aircraft after the AFNG finished with them? I know there is a couple of them around still, but did any one else use them. Thanks

Ugly beast.
IIRC, two were flying as warbirds in the 70s. I don’t know their status today.
It would be interesting to get some contemporary pilot comparisons on it vs the “D” re: power, flying qualities, etc.
One is on outside static at the Lackland AFB, Texas (the USAF enlisted basic training base) parade ground….painted as a wartime D model.

I think to 40% less weight meant also less service time.

Thank you sir! About all I ever heard about them was that the KYNG lost one after the war chasing a flying saucer and in Air Classics years ago a story about a guy who was rebuilding a warehouse in St Louis and found a H model with the wings off and by the side of the plane behnd a false wall. This was told for the truth! Keep them wings a flapping.

Hi Ole Pilot,
I don’t believe any other airforce used the H model Mustang, I guess most were declared surplus and scrapped.
Here is a shot of Mike Coutches N551H aircraft that’s based at Hayward in California. I believe there are only five P51 H models still in existence.
