Hi
Does anyone here have any good clear photos of the TFC P38 California Cutie?? Especially need good pic of the nose art and if possible, cockpit shots too. I did a Google image search (type California cutie into Google &….. 😮 😀 ) but there are very few pics on the net. These are for a friend who is making a very detailed P38 for FS2004.
Thanks in advance

Here is a link to my thread on the restoration of the Memphis Belle after being removed from Mud Island. I visited the restoration in August 2003.

It’s a real one – and I seem to remember reading it was FLOWN into McGuire AFB in the early 1980s! Unbelievable, isn’t it!
Yep, Dave Tallichet flew the plane (N9957V) to McGuire AFB in the spring of 1981. Enroute to New Jersey Tallichet experienced a nose gear collapse in Memphis, but delivered the plane to McGuire AFB in May 81. There has been a lot of controversy about this plane being put outside on a pedestal for so many years. In 1988 it was brought down, refurbished, and unbeliveably put back on the pylon! 🙁 I seem to remember that there was some talk about putting roof over its head, but don’t know if that ever came to fruitation! These photos are from the WIX registry! http://www.warbirdregistry.org/p38registry/p38-4453015.html

What???????????????? You would think that the USAF would move in to see that this Lighting be moved to its facility at Dayton and a mock up model is placed on the memorial. Maybe someone can update this….. I find this hard to believe !!!!! I beleive that the Air Force has taken over the Memphis Belle and is moving it off Mud Island in Memphis…perhaps someone here can update the story!

Is that P-38 a real one sitting outside in the NJ weather or is that a model ? I would hope it has been moved inside for restoration and repair.

It took me a bit to dig these out, but here they are. The black and white is an original print, the color shot and enlargement were printed out for a display but were done from an original print. I also enlarged the figure’s face. Hope these help, let me know when the final product is ready to go!

If a moderator or the webbie locks a tread it is time to keep quiet. But to be told by someone who posts here that we are not to talk about it because he/she don’t like the topic is bulls**t. If you don’t wanna discuss something, stay away from the tread. I can understand the sadness and grief when it comes to the loss of someone you may know, but to tell off anyone else on a public forum does not give you much credit. As sad as it is, what happened is a part of history, and should not be forgotten!
Also, to Stumac. You can’t really ask a stupid question. You can only get a stupid reply!

Guys, the intentions of this thread was not to create unrest. I worked at Duxford and know all about the politics there. This isn’t about Duxford or any of its ‘personalities’, its simply a request for some photos to help with a project, which I hope will be a fitting tribute to a fantastic pilot and an old friend. If this thread is going to cause problems, I would rather have it deleted.
To those that have posted the pics so far, a really big THANK YOU!! Please keep them coming.

For the last ######## who said anything about the operation of the a/c your words not mine if people want to see what happened then go to any related links do not disscuss it on here you seem to forget it is still too painfull for a lot of people to even think about let alone seeing people talk about I know it is for me so lets talk about something else comprendo!!!!!
SOME OF YOU GUYS ARE REALLY SOMETHING DON’T YER KNOW 😀

The forum exists to promote historic aviation – if a question is legitamate it’s perfectly entitled to a reasoned reply. I do not seek to presume what other people should discuss – the operation of the P-38 is clearly in the public domain and a subject for discussion.

If someone genuinely does’nt know and asks a serious question in the right spirit then theres nothing stupid about it 🙁 it was only the response above that was stupid and rude as well 🙁
This accident occurred a while ago and people from other countries and of a younger age group may not have had the same background knowledge that any of us that were there have.
Not rude at all lets just leave it alone!!!!!

To a lot of people it was and still is a stupid question so lets leave it here and now !!!!!!!

A few manners wouldn’t go amiss, Digby. Everyone is entitled to their view – David made his point both with clarity and sensitivity. Replies like this only help to turn a discussion into a brawl.

I don’t think it’s a silly question at all. It’s now part of the history of the operators at Duxford airfield and whilst incredibly sad it’s an event that happened. The AAIB report doesn’t come to any clear conclusions – however
we lost a fine pilot and an immaculate Lightning.

Hmmm….thanks….I have cockpit shots but they are in storage. I think it’s been 13 years this week since I saw the airplane when it left Chino. I watched them build it there, shot the first engine runs and flight…great memories from a great time. John
That was quite interesting, wasn’t it! I remember Simon (Brown) and I used to converge down to the old chapel every evening as we knew the plane was going to fly. Best was the first time Stephen Gray flew it, and Steve Hinton flew cover in the Air Museums P-38. A pair of them in the air together can only be described as magnificent!

I watched them build it there, shot the first engine runs and flight…great memories from a great time. I even met a pilot who flew F-5’s who was stationed at the same base this actual airframe was at…He may have flown the airplane but his logbook wasn’t clear on serial numbers.
